Police in Kasai City near Kobe have arrested a 29-year-old factory worker named Yoshifumi Takabe on suspicion of burning down his own home on Sunday. The suspect reportedly doused his room with kerosene and lit it with a lighter around 2:10 p.m. on Sunday. The resulting fire eventually burned down the two-story house, which was about 250 square meters (about 2,700 square feet) and made partially from wood.

The police investigators say that the suspect had doused himself with kerosene, but had escaped the fire without injuries. His 55-year-old mother was also in the house but escaped without injuries. According to the police, the suspect said that his mother had gotten rid of his "valuable" Gundam plastic models, so he wanted to kill himself.

    • I love my anime as much as any girl, but hey that dude was extreme! (I also don't own action figures, but I would have some of the pets as plushies if I had the cash!)

I don't condone his actions, but out of mutual respect for each other, his mother should not have trashed his collectibles, chances are he spent years getting them and lots of money and they obviously were meaningful still.
That goes for not messing with anyone's stuff without asking... geez.

    • Obviously the reaction was crazy and uncalled for, but his mom's throwing out of her 29 (!) year old son's collection is also crazy. I would wager that she was a crazy control freak and probably this poor guy living with a mother like that is where and why he was in the state of mind he was in. I'm sure she must have known that his collection meant a lot to him, and that she knowingly took action to destroy something her son loved. Whatever emotional distress this man was obviously in, I'm sure it came from growing up with a woman like this for a mom, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

It seems that people who do crazy things like this usually have horrible abusive overbearing (or the opposite -- neglectful) parents. I tend to think this is probably the mother's fault to a large extent.

      A Freudian follower?
My mom did stuff like this to me when I was little and I never did anything violent in response.
This mother allowed him to collect them so she wasn't so bad, was she?
There must have been pre-existing problems between them that built up to this situation.
He was 29 yr. old. Maybe he didn't have a job or spent all his money on these collector type articles and the family needed his financial and/or physical help and he was unavailable because he spent so much time with his hobby(ies).

My mother did not do that sort of thing to me and I turned out just fine. If she hadn't shown any caring at all for the things I enjoyed and actively sought to destroy the stuff i loved, it probably would have felt horrible, and I wouldn't have the great relationship with her that I do now.

"There must have been pre-existing problems between them that built up to this situation."

Right, that's my point. This is obviously just my opinion, but if it's true that the guy spent all kinds of time building and painting these figures, then it seems logical to assume that his mother must have known how much they meant to him, and regardless of what her goal was, I do think it was extremely cruel of her to throw them out on him, so I do think she was probably "that bad".

Even though we really don't know the situation, it seems rational, given the mother's complete disregard for her son's feelings and possessions, that she just might not be the loving, caring, motherly type. Rather, it seems probable that this overbearing, controlling attitude of hers affected her son's self-esteem and sense of being loved in a negative way. I assume you recognize that a lot of messed up adults grew up in homes where they were abused or neglected, so I don't need to back that up with evidence (it's obvious right?), so it seems possible that she is the reason why the guy was mentally unstable in the first place.

My parents were/are great. I can definitely imagine that if I was abused and made to feel unloved, I could have ended up with serious issues too.

But I don't claim to really know the situation, so your opinion is just as valid as mine. I still blame the mother, but that's just my opinion.

I'm sure both are to blame.
And I have a close, loving relationship with my mom. I'm the oldest and my parents were particularly diligent with me and did some things that now a days would be considered harsh but I understand their reasons.
They were doing what they thought best at the time. They raised me to be kind, considerate and above all responsible for my actions as well as responsible for care of my younger siblings.

    • I would be seriously pissed! Moms, sisters, older siblings have no respect of what a possesion means to you. I used to have this sick collection of cabage patch kids...then my sister threw them out for more space in the room and like 4 years later people raved about how valuabe they were. I was in a pretty bad mood myself!

    • I would have a similar fit of murderous rage, If I was 12 and my parents threw away my collection of hotwheels.

At 29 though... This guy needs to get laid

    • I honestly feel this is a fair trade... That is like you buying a shitload of games or something you value and your mom just throwing them out... His mother was a turd and he reacted properly...

    • It might seem silly to us, but certain things are very special to certain people. The person who was best placed to realise just how much those things meant to the fellow was his mother. Obviously she's either just stupidly cruel, or she didn't know her son very well.

    • Just for the record, it's common and socially acceptable for bachelors in Japan to live at home, as it is in Italy and surely other cultures as well. It'd be much more common here if it weren't frowned upon.

well, if that's the case then I can see why the response of the 29 year old was one that would be more expected of an adolesent child rather than of an adult. Granted a spoiled child, but, without the reasoning of an adult.

    • No, burning down the house was not an acceptable reaction, but, What the hell was she thinking? Of course, what the hell is he doing living with his mom? At 29? It's nice to see that the U.S.A. doesn't have the monopoly on disfunctional families, though.

    • Sure, now that he's a confirmed emotional cripple, it's fair game to make fun of him.

What you'll never hear about is how he became such a psychological retard.

One thing seems certain, the mother is used to obliterating any kind of identity the man has setup for himself.

    • They might have been models he had to build and paint. That takes a ton of time. The guy needs to get out more but what his mother did was very wrong. She was trying to help him but in the wrong way.

    • Last week on TV someone said, My mom threw away my comic books when I was a kid. Could've made so much money.
Don't think gundam toys would bring more than retail value.
Now Ultimate Muscle (M.U.S.C.L.E.) toys, the right kind can be over $100.

    • Maybe he wasted all his adult time doing these figures. So now maybe he'll get an apt. of his own so he can start another collection.
Maybe she wanted him to man up!

    • I keep reading comments comparing Gundam models to Transformers and the like. For guys who are into this they take hours to assemble and paint. It is a hobby that guys devote themselves to like car guys and people who make costumes for sci-fi conventions and comic book conferences. There is always the guy who takes it too far. There is no excuse for what he did, he was disturbed.

Maybe he should have grown up before the melt down. I love this new generation there going to make us GenXer's look good

    • I hate to break this to a lot of you, but sometimes those "toys" can fetch a pretty penny from a collector. I understand his rage. My own mother understands this as well (her father threw away stacks of Batman Detective comics, one of which was a first appearance).
Parents should realize that the toys they buy their children eventually become extremely valuable to a collector.

Like my Rancor toy from the 80's. I still have him, and I know I could sell him for a nice price.

Nonetheless, No kid should burn down his house... how about just doing more subtle things, like taking up the drums and driving the whole neighborhood nuts with loud drum noises? or "accidentally" nudging a precious piece of china from the shelf? Now you don't even have a room to put the other stuff you have! We all have important items that we own, and many of you would react the same way if they were disposed of without your consent. I'm glad my parents were nerds. O=)

    • Sistersafety: have you watched the video of the kid whose mother canceled his WOW account? People like this obviously had few boundaries as children. I'm sure the opposite can be argued as well. I feel that cases such as these reinforce my belief in spare the rod spoil the child. IDC how upset you are… nothing warrents this kind of behavior.

    • Well, if they're the models and he built all of them then I could see why he'd be astronomically upset.

In the manner of Chris Rock: "I'm not saying he should have [done it], but I understand."
