Saturday 8 August 2009: The English Defence League (EDL) and Casuals United attempted to march through Birmingham. Both groups claim they are not racist and are only concerned with peaceful protest against militant Muslims. Some scenes in this video rush clearly show racist abuse from those in these groups.

Unite Against Fascism held a counter demonstration, to oppose these groups, both being involved in clashes with police and residents earlier in the year in Birmingham and Luton.

This time, as the video shows, the EDL members that avoided being "kettled" by police went straight for the anti-fascist protest, goaded the Birmingham youth, then got beaten and chased out of town.

    • Its counter productive, surely if you really wanted to help stop these people you would take into account the reaction your actions cause and provoke. Don't miss-understand me, I'm not saying that when I'm confronted by a member of the BNP/EDL that I would be able to control my anger, these people really get to me in a way that very few things do, but I realise we need to work on the underlying problems to try and stop this from happening. Short term actions that whilst morrally justifiable cause more anger from the right wing just lead to an escalation in problems.

you're right of course - but sometimes it gets beyond intellectualising.

I've had to deal with similar thugs who came over to Glasgow from NI for an Orange March one year. In my local shop at 8 in the morning racially abusing the young woman who worked there.

Four big 45-50 yr old men attacking a woman - and they shat themselves when I saw what was happening and started on them.

I was bigger and angrier than any of them though - if I'd been smaller then they'd have started on me without doubt.

Bullies and cowards the lot of them.

    • Sorry, I didn't quite convey my meaning. It was the fascists who started the violence but certain people on the other side were also involved in provoking violence, which no matter how much you want to beat the shit out of the BNP/EDL twats, its never going to be the most effective way of dealing with the problem.

If you go and use violence against these people, they will turn it into propaganda, or use it to provoke a reaction from their supporters. Deny them the oppertunity, use reason and other methods to show how stupid they are.

Almost forgot, maybe we should address he underlying issue, low income area's without good education......

I've no problem at all in using violence against them. It is the only thing they will understand.

I don't care about propaganda - I don't say or do what I do because I want to be seen in a good light. I know that it's for good reasons even if those on the sidelines don't.

    • The EDL and the BNP make me ashamed to be white British ethnicity. Its a shame that there wee people on the anti fascist "side" that provoked and relished the violence.
I think some people just like to fight and picked the anti fascist side purely because they could not join the other side!
Racism is stupid, might as well judge people on hair colour or the size of their chin, just makes no sense.

As soon as I can, I'm out of this country - when we have race riots on the streets you know that society has almost lost of its benefits and that stupidity has started to rule.

There have been many race riots in Britain - the earliest I know of was in Glasgow in the early 1900s, around 100 years ago.

As for your claim that the protesters were provoking the violence - you must be soft on INGLANDERS if you think that.

The BNP/EDL scum provoke such reactions by organising their protests in the first place and if you don't think they need to be crushed then please step out of the way and leave those of us who have the balls to get on with the job.

      thanks.

    • Resorting to their barbaric tactics makes us no better. Keeping the fight intellectual and with togetherness, democracy will win overall. Stay proud to be part of a multi-cultural society.

    • nice one - it was good to see them grudgingly start to run away like the cowards they are....

I usually don't support aggression, but in cases like this they need to be run down and attacked.

    • Indeed, saddening, Seems we're in a bit of a history re-run. Recession, anger and racist gangs appear on the streets. It reminded me of the scenes I watched on TV in the early eightes, when I was growing up.
