Where's the outrage? Hello, Mr. Gore?_____________
The Obama administration late last week quietly approved one of six major mountaintop removal permits that were said to be undergoing close scrutiny by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Without announcing the move publicly, EPA gave the nod for the federal Army Corps of Engineers to issue a Clean Water Act permit for CONSOL Energy Inc.'s Peg Fork Surface Mine near Chattaroy in Mingo County.
EPA approved all eight valley fill waste piles originally proposed by CONSOL, provided that additional water testing is done before six of those fills are constructed, agency officials said.
Corps officials in Huntington approved the permit on Friday. Copies of key permit documents were not yet being made public, despite a promise from the Obama White House of increased transparency in the permit review process.
"We are disappointed that the administration has approved a new mountaintop removal mine without making any commitment to adopt new regulations or policies that would end this destructive practice," said Ed Hopkins, director of the Sierra Club's environmental quality program. "While we appreciate that the Obama administration is taking a harder look at mountaintop removal coal mining, unless that results in decisions that end the irreversible destruction of streams, the harder look isn't going to do the job."
After announcing a crackdown on mountaintop removal in late March, EPA administrator Lisa Jackson less than two months later cleared dozens of valley fill permits for issuance by the corps. Under federal law, the corps directly reviews these "dredge-and-fill" permits, but EPA has veto authority and is supposed to make sure the corps is doing a good job.

I have personally seen some of the post mining devastation. It is unconscionable. Yet another example of how Bush and Obama are two heads of the same coin.
Thanks for the post Jan.

unfortunately, this isn't an issue that's going to way unless you start giving this issue more exposure. you may want to start appealing to hollywood to push for films and documentaries in the region, or put together some scripts that use the effects of mtr as a central theme. it might be a good idea to set up a sight of environmental writers to collaborate on stories and issues to build awareness of this issue through the media and arts. i don't think it would hurt. people seem to be more receptive when they have an effective medium to interpret. using this method to make this concern more mainstream could build pressure on politicians to put the breaks on these operations. it would be good if we could tie it into human interest pieces. perhaps if angelina jolie pretended to get black lung or loses brad pitt at an mtr sight and she befriends george clooney, the naturalist dying of blacklung, we can sell environmentalism as a more attractive solution than having john voight slip will obama smith a few campaign funds to finance dirty coal. (i'm just saying) you could even really tie in other human rights issues, because of many of the other problems that mtr presents to human health.

I have kept stating in all my posts that Obama is not any different then Bush on many issues! The elite know damn well that they are ripping off this planet for profit and don't care! They only care about today, not the future, and under the present system they continue their murderous plans of destruction of our natural resorces and the total denial of human rights! it is a connected people! We must take our country back at any cost!

Is it any wonder that we have one of the highest suicide rates among young and old people of most countries (in most other countries they just die from lack of health care-but we'll be there as soon as this health care reform gets taken care of by the fat cats in Washington who don't need it anyway because we're paying for theirs FOREVER!), but anyway, the machine just keeps rolling along and President Obama is slowly getting rolled over by it, no matter what he thinks, does, says, or who he tries to put in office. These things have been all worked out long before his administration came along by one of the worst ecological machines known as an "administration" since we became a country. I was just wondering if ex-president GWB has trees around his property in Texas and how many oil rigs dot the land inside his high security fencing guarded by our tax dollars. I'm thinking lots and lots of trees that don't grow there naturally, watered by water that doesn't come there by natural means, tended by multitudes of Secret Service gardeners lest someone try to mine oil under one of them; so seriously, I doubt that the thousands of barrels of oil going into his and all of his "constituents" pockets every day are coming from the non-existent rigs ringing his house, pumping their little hearts out to keep the house lights on for the rest of us.
I happen to have a very rare, chronic disease that will be taken care of once the new health reform is passed, so my children will have to worry about all this mess.
Did someone say that the world ends in 2012?

Now a judge has rebuffed the ruling they wanted changed. The coal companies won again. This is why the practice of mountaintop removal must be BANNED altogether.

It doesn't matter who's responsible for the bottom line signature--as President Obama has said emphatically on several instances with his finger pointing down on the tabletop, "The buck stops here!" So forget bickering about who signs what, the landscape is being destroyed as we sit here so quietly discoursing the merits of love and anger! Get off your soap boxes (learn to spell), and start writing letters to congressmen, senators, and the people who are really sitting back laughing at us while their coffers are being filled with the kickback money from this! When will people realize that the more these fat cats cause us to fight amongst ourselves, write stupid comments, and play wonderful music instead of get out in the streets for reform--like other countries do--the fatter they get and the skinnier we get! Get off your skinny asses, quit complaining, get on the internet for a list of senators and congressmen and start writing>and for goodnes sakes, turn on spell checker!

I'm not angry at the world, I care about it and am doing something to stand up for it. Too bad all some others seem to do is apologize for those disrespecting her. And yes, I do blame him. He is just as responsible for this as Bush was, especially since he appointed the director of the EPA. And plebeian? Was that supposed to be intelligent and not rude? And if he didn't approve of this he then should be speaking out against what his EPA did any day now.... I'll wait.
Quote:
"We are disappointed that the administration has approved a new mountaintop removal mine without making any commitment to adopt new regulations or policies that would end this destructive practice," said Ed Hopkins, director of the Sierra Club's environmental quality program. Where is your focus? What is more important to you? The destruction of our mountains and biodiversity, or your own polltics? You call me angry simply to diminish the truth of this? You look at how they blow the tops off mountains and tell me how you don't get angry at how your "church" is being destroyed all for greed and profit. You think the people living there aren't angry seeing their home toxified and lost to them? I would say that people aren't angry enough in this country when it comes to this. Channelling anger, or if you will, righteous indignation for a GOOD CAUSE gets THINGS DONE.

you're funny. any logical arguement for blaming obama in this? not yet? i didn't think so. and you are responsible for the video autoplaying. you just don't know enough about computers to do that? i wont waste my time telling you how. i may be rude, but i'm not misguided or angry at the world. do you honestly think that Obama is personally responsible for this? do you, really? do you honestly think that the cheif executive micromanages the entire government? blame the director of the EPA you plebeian.
i have no love for the destruction of my church (the earth) but the way you preach your viewpoint undermines your message at times. what did anger ever solve? can you tell me one thing that anger has accomplished? espescially in the name of love? one effing thing? tolerance and love go a lot farther than bile and anger. lead by example. put positive thoughts into the universe, rather than negative ones. if you're angry with obama, where was the proportionate rage vs bush, who was a billion times worse? just use your logic here. i asked a simple question. do you think obama personally signed off on this? if not, then dont act like it's his fault.

OK, for those who will now go on about how RUDE it is for the first video to start when the thread is clicked on, a step by step primer on what to do so you don' t have to see or hear what they are doing to the Appalachian mountains:
1. The third button on the video console from the right side is a volume button (note the little speaker.) You can use your mouse to turn the volume all the way down so you don't have to hear it.
2. The first button on the console which should be on your left can be clicked on to stop the video.
This isn't rocket science, and I am not RUDE for placing it here and am not responsible for it autoplaying. Anyone who knows how to shut it off who can relay how to do so civilly would be appreciated. Now that these instructions have been given hopefully the topic will be discussed.

This is absolutely sickening! I can't stomach a continuation of the abominable practices carried out to dramatic proportions by the Bush administration in regard to our country's environmental practices! Tell me Pres. Obama has not truly subscribed to this 'clean coal' idea. why would we waste time and money continuing down the road of relying on a finite natural supply- no matter how clean it is!
Someone has to answer for this! We must be held accountable for this and all of our other actions as a country. If there are any other world leaders with concern for our well being as human beings, I really wish they would give us a taste of our own medicine! Oh, I forgot, they're ALL too busy trying to make money and stay in power!
This is sickening, absolutely sickening.

What wonderful videos you have added here, thank you again!
For me the natural world is my soul (obviously not everyone's), the place i feel perfectly well and connected to the all that is, the place i can find peace and calm, where I can center, heal, think and be thankful for the great gift of beauty this creation offers us... and and it is an extremely painful, heart wrenching experience to watch all this unnecessary destruction in the name of god and the almighty dollar..... I cry!!!p.s. and i choke!!!

Thanks, and yes, 'quietly.' Didn't we have enough secrecy when it came to environmental destruction and our health from the Bush regime? And once again, connecting the dots between environmental and healthcare policy passes right over their heads. And I am actually waiting for environmentalists like Mr. Gore to come out and state this is not a good move and put this country before the party. RFK Jr. thankfully has done so regarding this. I am so sick of the partisan one upping in general. Our future is more important than their politics.
