The use of the word "gay" has become overwhelming, it's nice to see a campaign aimed at something as simple as "think before you speak." What do you think, is this effective?

    • It's honestly not like my feelings get hurt when my friends say "that's so gay."

I don't go and cry in a corner or feel bad about myself or any of that. Just like I don't do any of those things when people tell me I'm going to hell.

I would like people not to say it. Using "gay" as a synonym for stupid is really ridiculous. I'd really rather not the minority group I identify being equated to things that are uncool, stupid, not favorable, or any variation thereof.

It's the same as if, when I got a ten page paper from a professor, saying "that's sooooo black." or "That's so Muslim of him."

Not only is it poor English and just plain wrong, it is pretty demeaning to those groups. Not saying "that's so gay" is just another step I'd like to take in getting homosexuality a status equal to that of other minorities.

Then again, I don't think this ad is particularly effective at doing anything other than entrenching the phrase :-P

If you do have these feelings, then you're not truly OK with the use of this term. I've had this conversation with many of my students who are out, and they always try to suppress the fact that the term bothers them a bit. Try talking about it to your friends about this - if they're really your friends, they won't judge you for it, and you could make a difference by eliminating just a tiny fraction of hate speech in this world.

    • I think this will (or already) backfire.

Why do I think someone, somewhere is trying to get people to stop saying "FAIL!"

    • That's so "people posting on forums because they are the quiet ones in real life social situations and don't speak up where it matters"... hurt doesn't it? Well so does being gay. I mean being called gay. Wait... what the Hell's the thing?

    • This will be just about as effective as an after school special or the posters hung up in office break rooms. Wait, it won't be that effective.

    • I think this is a ridiculous and stupid attempt to attack a phrase that only a limited number of people use...

I also know a lot of gay people who actually say the phrase "That's so gay" all the time. Not to mention other things such as "Fag Hag", etc...

It's not like people are saying "Wow, that was such a cocksuckingly queer and faggoty turn of events!". I think people need to stop being so overly fucking sensitive and just live their lives... so much whining about unimportant shit...

In summary if people saying that's so gay hurts your feelings you really need help.

Thanks for such an open minded reply...

You are lucky to live somewhere that doesn't count this as a popular turn of phrase. Unfortunately, if you think its not running rampant throughout our nation's high schools, your are simply naive.

If you think it's fine to re-define our country's common vernacular, and be a part of a movement that wants the word "Gay" to mean "lame," then you'd probably also agree with coining phrases like "thats so Black" or "that's so Jewish" or "that's so Catholic" or "that's so Puerto Rican," all to mean "That's so Lame." My point is, unless you want the world to take a special and unique trait of yours that you are extremely proud of, such as your ethnicity, or your social affiliation, and re-define that word to mean "LAME," then you should acknowledge how pathetic, immature, and obnoxious it truly is to resort to this turn of phrase.

    • It's... actually not supposed to enrage gamers. It's attempt is to show the injustice of the word "gay" being used as a derogatory term and putting you in the shoes of those who are insulted by it.

If this poster made you upset, it worked.

I don't think its made anyone upset... its juvenile and stupid...

The people who get their feelings hurt by hearing people say that's so gay just really need to stop playing the victim.

Plenty of things people say everyday can be hurtful, but why not take it with a grain of salt or try and see the humor in it or just ignore it. Why get all uppity and butt hurt?

    • This campaign is so important. I wish it was around when I was teaching high school. I banned that phrase from my classroom, but it wasn't much help when you hear "...but Miss, our OTHER teachers don't get mad when we say that... " A school-wide or district-wide ban on this phrase would be a good place to start in many cases.
