Four British rowers ended their world record bid to save a pilot who crashed at sea have been hailed as heroes

The crew of British Orchid were 10 days into there attempt to break the world record for rowing around the British Aisles when one of the men spotted what he thought to be a plane crashing into the sea, the others said it might merely have been a seagull diving however the men agreed to investigate, throwing away all hope of their world record.

John O’Shaughnessy, the pilot and only passenger on board the plane had got caught in a storm on his way from Pembrokeshire to Taghmon, the same storm that had been battering the Orchid.

“The aircraft must have got caught in the same storm as us,” said Oliver Dudley, one of the rowers. “We thought we did not have a chance to get to the pilot because of the storm but I just shouted, ‘Row’ and the guys went into turbo drive.”

“The weather for the whole journey had been relentless and we were worrying because we were behind schedule; but when the plane crash happened it put it all into perspective,” he said.

“There is a fine line between ego and realism. There are more important things than trying to get into the record books.”

Nice one lads.
