Fla. doctor ousted after denouncing doughnuts

Dr. Jason Newsom railed against burgers, french fries, fried chicken and sweet tea in his campaign to promote better eating in a part of the country known as the Redneck Riviera. He might still be leading the charge if he had only left the doughnuts alone.

A 38-year-old former Army doctor who served in Iraq, Newsom returned home to Panama City a few years ago to run the Bay County Health Department and launched a one-man war on obesity by posting sardonic warnings on an electronic sign outside:

"Sweet Tea Liquid Sugar."

"Hamburger Spare Tire."

"French Fries Thunder Thighs."

He also called out KFC by name to make people think twice about fried chicken.

Then he parodied "America Runs on Dunkin'," the doughnut chain's slogan, with: "America Dies on Dunkin'."

Some power players in the Gulf Coast tourist town decided they had had their fill.

A county commissioner who owns a doughnut shop and two lawyers who own a new Dunkin' Donuts on Panama City Beach turned against him, along with some of his own employees, Newsom says. After the lawyers threatened to sue, his bosses at the Florida Health Department made him remove the anti-fried dough rants and eventually forced him to resign, he says.

America Dines on Dunkin' roaches would be OK <> or Americans Run from Dunkin' roaches would be OK too. Obviously the man is still upset about Dunkin' waittresses no longer wearing the sexy pink short skirts and flipped his burger. We don't often see this level of road rage towards food chains. Rowdy Roddy Piper indeed oh my soul riding a freight car into the pits of hell.

    No, wait. Wrong blog.

The Doctor is right. White flour (no fiber) white sugar and transfat oil used to fry. HMMMM about as unhealthy as it gets. Will make a person fat, clog arteries, and lead to early onset diabetes.

I think that's F'd up that this happened. He is a doctor and of course will be a champion for healthy eating. He is doing not only his job but helping people stay healthy by telling the truth. I hate the bad politics that happen to good people.

"The Florida Health Department has refused to talk about Newsom since he is considered a job applicant. "We will be happy to talk to you after the position has been filled," department spokeswoman Susan Smith said in an e-mail."

This quote makes me want to stab someone, these assholes think this is funny...

If anything you’d think a vet would stress the benefits of active lifestyle instead of just coming down so hard on delicious food. Then again maybe he did push for that sort of thing but was unable to make it the centerpiece of his message because he’s apparently a soulless food Nazi.

It is good news to see a doctor who is trying to promote healthy eating instead of just prescribing the medicines that the pharmaceutical companies tell him too. However, it doesn't seem like a posted sign would be very effective.
This is a good example of who is really in control of our health these days...

Just like the doc, I am sick and tired of seeing fat-asses everywhere I go. It's disgusting. Unless you have some type of glandular condition, there is NO excuse for obesity.

Let's not even mention the undue strain it puts on our already battered health care system.

It's a Doughnut(donut) for crying out loud. It's a sparce food. You need to be eating more than donuts anyhow. Doctor.. I love your persistance, but choice is the god given right of all humans. to choose to clog arteries is just the consequence. I love my donuts, and respect them too.

$140,000.00 in an advisory capacity? I agree with his message and would send him five bucks toward his campaign. The kind of money he's making and not actually doing medical work is a little over the top. Anyone want to bet that those "small" business owners were gops paying their employees unlivable wages?

Soylent Green came out originally as a plan to save the world from fat people eating doughnuts and having tapeworms. Since they were just employees it was okay to use the obese scum as examples to the rest. Besides, they found out when "for the children" was stamped on their plans it was quickly embraced anyway..

It was a good plan because the fat people couldn't run as fast as the thin people so the truck scoops always got fat people anyway. But once the fat people had all been scooped up the trucks began scooping up thin people. All this continued for about a decade but the death of all mankind happened anyway bercause they made one big miscalculation.

Thin people also have heart disease and cancer so the soylent green began to kill everybody caught in their own trap, a trap of hatred that returned and hit them in the neck, as all social boomerangs are wont to do.

Why do you need a slogan if you're teaching not preaching? You don't need to sell the best choice, it sells itself.

These people are def right - I'd MUCH rather stuff my face with fried and processed foods and dying early instead of facing the facts and taking responsibility for my health =)

with great power (this time on the basis of knowledge) comes great responsibility. if you want to change a system that is deeply rooted in an unhealthy culture you must begin with facts (not statistics but scientific evidence and examples) and inspiration. you have to appeal to human interest by showing how fast food and yes donuts have impacted everyday americans in a relatable way that is provocative and provides alternatives to making the changes that don't make the transition appear to be so intimidating. but if you strive to intimidate and villify everyone in the process, you're risking unfavorable results. i hope the guy doesn't get discouraged. i think that now would be a great time for activists to work on redefining how they market important information into an effective format that attracts constituents instead of vilifies them. they might find that a little bit of pragmatism gains a lot of support

    NOT MY SWEET TEA! *clings*

Ahem. Sorry. Got that out of my system.

I actually think this guy makes some good points, but at the same time, what about moderation? A doughnut or hamburger (especially a non-fast food burger) once in a while is not the worst thing ever. Telling people they have to completely eliminate all the foods they eat is only going to scare them off of healthy eating; why not talk about moderation and portion size and physical activity?

It may not be as catchy, but that's how actual, sustainable changes is in health are going to happen. Unfortunately, that's now what people want to hear--we want catchy soundbites and programs to drop 30 lbs in a week.

<> sgwhites has spoken great wisdom. To have superior physical and mental health we have to eat challenging foods once in a while. He points up a great truth! Since the invention of the evil AIR CONDITIONER we have entered through a doorway of evil health conditions because we altered our environment to stop sweating, the healthiest thing of all being sweating during sex.

<> Sweating through the skin aids the kidneys!

<> We got heatpumps and stopped sweating, an evil for which we are paying DEARLY. Cancer cells have a high metabolic rate, so when our body heats up it kills off cancer cells. We all need to throw open our windows, throw the Evil AC Human Libido Killer machine out in the streets and proclaim to the top of our lungs WE AREN'T GOING TO TAKE THIS EVIL TEMPERATURE SAMENESS TREATMENT ANY LONGER.

Dr. Newsome is just another one of those people who want to warn us about the dangers of trans-fat foods, and it is sad that he lost his job over it. There is a larger issue, and that is that all of these unhealthy snacks will continue to over-burden our already strained healthcare system. These and other artery-clogging foods lead to obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and a host of other diseases which lead to expensive medical interventions, surgeries, and increased medical premiums and co-payments. So, while a person may have the freedom and right to eat whatever they choose, still, this is a situation that if it is not held in check by presenting healthier alternatives, may very well affect us all in the worst possible way leading to a health epidemic.
