Camping is more popular than ever, but Michele Hanson took things further when she shared a tent with her two boxers at a summer camp for dogsThe dogs need camping, though. That is really why I am here – to socialise the dogs, because their behaviour is fairly grim. They tend to gang up, dash ferociously at other dogs and pin them to the ground by their necks, which is not ideal. They weigh 4st each and I am sick of being pulled over, into ponds and flat on my face. But it's not their fault; it's mine, because they've been badly brought up. By me. It is me who needs the training.

I got this in an email today and I thought this story is appropriate for all the dog haters that have been writing in.

Motherfortruth: of course people have pets for selfish reasons... that's obvious. I have a dog because dogs make me happy. if not I wouldn't bother. he reminds me that I too am an animal and we all (animals) have emotions and feelings (as different as they may be between species)
hell, even birds have feelings. I know that even my parrots get lonely and angry or feel affection or excitement, regardless of what anyone else trys to say about it... animals DO have emotions. and, I'm not saying they're emotional lives are very much like ours, but non-the-less they still feel.

poor dogs? what? they love this sort of thing. and domestication isn't a bad thing... they do it on their own, we just guide them.

I didn't mean to imply domestication is a bad thing only that having multiple sets of standards for animal behavior can be confusing for the animals. This could be especially true of inexperienced animal owners with untrained animals.

Oh, MoFoTruth
You have found my weakness at last.
I love dogs, ever moreso since I put my 14+ year companion down last year.
I rescued the lad from the street when he was about 1 yr, and he lived for an estimated 15 years with nary a serious health issue. He lived out his last 10 years on the temperate west coast after we moved from the midwest in 1998 and he spent part of a year with me in Chihuahua, Mexico while I was working there temporarily.
A loving German Shepard-cross named Helmut.
May he rest in everlasting peace. - 6 months ago

RFIDemocracy,
I am sorry for your loss of Helmut :(.
Although I do not have pets I am genuinely compassionate towards all living.
I find that some pet lovers will go to extreme for pets while expressing ignorance, intolerance and impatience towards the fellow humans and basic human rights. I also find that some people have pets for selfish reasons to simply fulfill their desire to be the master. - 6 months ago

Thanks, MFT. I'll get over him one of these years.
And I agree, animals are emotionally centered. Particularly dogs, the beasts with whom I am most familiar.

helen: what in this post atributes any human characteristics to dogs? hell, the woman was talking about her dog eating a glove and how she had to pull it out of it's rectum... how human is that? dog fights... pooping outside... yeah sounds like dogs... not people... who ever said anything about these animals being human and NOT dogs?
also, dogs DO have personalities (as ironic as this may sound) but they're still dogs.
what's with all this 'liberal' labeling? do you know what liberal mean? you use the word like you don't know what it actually means.

Just one more feel good liberal project--- try to make dogs behave like something besides dogs.
I don't know if anyone's seen the new animated show "the Goode Family" but I highly recommend it. It's about a family of left wingers who are a riot. They have a "vegan" dog who's hilarious.

what the hell does any of this have to do with 'liberal' anything or 'left winger' whatever?
are you insane? do you even know what liberal means? because it doesn't seem like you have a clue. do you even know anything about dogs?
is this show animated or something? how could a dog be vegan?

2helenahandbasket:
Well, from what I've seen, folks with a liberal slant try to give their dogs human charastics and try to make them out to be just "dogs who don't know any better".
Anyone who expects a dog to be anything but a dog is crazy. We can't "teach" them to not be dogs. They behave like dogs because they're dogs, NOT humans.
And yes, the show's a hoot, because the liberal folks in the show INSIST their dog just doesn't know any better than to want meat.

Those dogs are going to harm someone. Just wait and see. You have created a pack, by having two dogs, and there will be hell to pay. Some people really do not need dogs and some dogs do not really need people. Are they neutered? These were bred to be working dogs, not pets. I am beside myself at the ignorance of certain "dog people". It is no wonder that so many deaths and attacks occur in the U.S. and U.K. due to the owners lack of understanding of "dog" behavior. They are too old to change their behavior, you have ruined two potentially great companions.

MoonLoon:
dogs are never too old to change behavior, because training never stops, it just slows as they settle into routines.
as for the 'so many deaths"... most attacks are by trained attack dogs doing just what their supposed to do (attacking intuders), but some... say for instance when a young child that knows nothing about dogs, their behavior, or their language, then ignores the warnings given and gets attacked... you cannot blame a dog for doing what their trained to do, nor for acting instincually.
dogs never just attack. they always give ample warnings. some people are either too stupid or simply unaware and inexperienced with dogs...
also you're more likely to be killed by lightning than killed by a dog.
I'M amazed at how quickly one tries to point out ignoraance when ignorant themselves. kinda hypocritical.
