There's that amazing UK show Skins. Season 3 they had lots of legit les action.

And it wasn't any less hot than the fake les action.

Haha, finally a story on the girls!

It always seems like, when guys are gay on tv shows, they're just gay (and usually in the obvious, flamboyant way). When girls are gay, at least one (if not both) are straight and yeah, once sweeps is over, it's back on the narrow path.

Thanks for covering this. Hilarious as always!

the gays are a sin toward god even though the bible
    has homosexual refrences

This is great, it's about time TV was called out for all this lesbian sweeps stunts instead of actually writing lesbian characters.

That Katy Perry cover is *so* much better than the original. Any chance of a full length version being made available as an MP3?

    I'm completely serious here.

What's with this glamorizing of dykes? I never found them particularly attractive of "titillating"........ :(

great report - until the Torchwood bit. strongest gay male characters (ok, 2 bi's, and one tried to say it was "just him") on tv. and it wasn't an issue; just their relationship.

or did i miss something about it being phony?

who was the lady at the end with the guitar?

Torchwood is really bad example there! Very friendly to gay males. While it's had two instances of exploitative-trope girl-on-girl sexuality in season one (gay male writers trying to appeal to straight viewers) with Tosh and with Gwen, season two gave us two Victorian lesbian lovers who were very much in love. And Jack is the world's best advocate of male bisexuality ;), with his bisexual lover Ianto in tow.

Also, the above poster was right about Skins. Seasons one and two - strong gay male character, who was used to titillate female and gay male audiences, with lots of story time and who got a serious relationship in the 2nd season. In the third season, we got a genuine lesbian romance which addressed all the complexities of labelling and all the accusations of being a lezfaux, it being a fakeout, etc.

It's so true, and it makes me sad there there is no real representation of lesbian or bisexual female characters on mainstream TV that have longterm female partners and aren't just doing it "for the menz." Spot on with this one!

That acoustic remake of "I Kissed a Girl" at the end was awesome, and as a bi woman I can definitely say that she is totally my type! =)

In all fairness, friends was a very progressive show and while it had a chance for years to exploit the existing lesbian couple for ratings, they didn't.

Not only that, but in the episode you showed Rachel in no way was pretending to be a lesbian or had any real interest in kissing her. She was just insulted that her companion didn't remember kissing her in collage.

I heard about this segment on the Jordan, Jesse Go! podcast, and it is amazing! Bryan is hilarious, more of him please!!

Several people have already commented that Torchwood was a bad example of "lesbian ratings stunts", but nobody pointed out that the most male-male kissing in the show is almost always from bisexual or even straight men (the lead protagonist is bi and his boyfriend claims to be straight - until he started doing his boss).

Maybe the gay writers of the show (I had no idea they were gay until now, by the way) thought that bisexuallity would be more acceptable for the public, like taking a holiday from being straight.

I have often wondered about this issue myself. Is it really progressive if characters are kissing just to increase ratings? I think the first show to do this was Roseanne. She kissed a chick on her show and it was all the rage and controversy in the nineties. But she also had regular reoccuring lesbian characters in primetime too. I dunno.....

Yeah, I'd TOTALLY seen how women lezzing out on TV is acceptable and approved of, but...two guys generally AIN'T! WTF?! How offensive!!!

Oh, and there IS a fabulous male version of Kerry's song, called "I Kissed A Boy" by Chris Savatore, and another vers. by Cobra Starship, and others...
