WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is challenging critics of his push to overhaul the health care system to stop making "phony claims" about proposals now the subject of intense coast-to-coast debate."This is an issue of vital concern to every American, and I'm glad that so many are engaged," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday. "But it also should be an honest debate, not one dominated by willful misrepresentations and outright distortions, spread by the very folks who would benefit the most by keeping things exactly as they are."
"So today, I want to spend a few minutes debunking some of the more outrageous myths circulating on the Internet, on cable TV and repeated at some town halls across this country," the president said.
Obama said the overhaul would not cover illegal immigrants nor use taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions, and he does not intend a government takeover of health care — as critics have claimed at contentious town hall-style meetings with members of Congress.
He also took a swipe at "death panels," an idea former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin introduced on her Facebook page.
"As every credible person who has looked into it has said, there are no so-called death panels — an offensive notion to me and to the American people," Obama said. "These are phony claims meant to divide us."

"He thinks of himself as a successor to James Dean-a Rebel without a Cause-when in reality he's more like an Eisenhower conservative. 'Consider the minority opinion,' he says into the rich man's tape recorder, 'but try to get along with the majority opinion once it's accepted.' He doesn't really believe any of this, but he envies the people who do, who can. He wants to be like them, like the rich man he locks in the closet, the only man he doesn't kill, the only man he sympathises with, and the one least in need of sympathy. It's not infrequently the people at the bottom who most vigorously defend the very rules that put and keep them there."

He should challenge them . 30% of healthcare costs now go to HMO's . Medicare only takes 4% . If we had single payer , costs would drop by 26% and everyone would be covered , no bureaucrat would be dumping people because whey were getting too expensive ..

You have seriously confused the hell out of me. What are you talking about? You want him to show that he cares? HOW HOW HOW HOW HOW does he do that? How has he NOT done that?
For him to care would he come on camera crying? Or would he sit down for 3 weeks and go through every single page of each bill, totaling well over 3000 pages, so every moron in this country can get it?
The republicans scream government take over. Which is complete and utter bullshit. They want us to start over? FUCK THAT!
Look I don't like any bill being 1000 pages and there are no doubt flaws in every bill proposed. I agree we should have the option that congress does a.k.a. a Single PAYER system. Why shouldn't I have the right to buy into a public option?
But I still can't see any point that you have made. And so I have selected to put this 'down.' This should not be at the topic of the discussion in the 'news.' on cuurent

Funny how Washington had no problem forking over money when our "freedom" was in "danger." But 50 million Americans without the access to the "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" that healthcare affords, plus the millions more who are jerked around by the healthcare system is grounds for a civil cold war?
I just don't understand how the few can profit of the misery of the many so openly. It doesn't make me want to call people names, it makes me want to weep with grief and shame.

I believe that the health care needs help...and the help it needs is to be just like congress's.
If they want to give us something and they really care...then we should have what they have. What we are getting in that ridiculously long unnecessary wordy document isn't something they'd want or they'd have it as well.

I have to be brief here because I am required to go help some friends celebrate something...
I can understand that point... and actually agree with it. I am for a single payer system... which would include congress since they would in fact be the only payer...
despite that, if you read through all of the bill and take a look at the opinions that were put into it, this is not something that is slapped together, and in fact will help congresses health care as well. One example of this... As of now the only time doctors are held to operational sequences are when a patient is insured by medicare, there are portions of this bill that are trying to make sequential sequences mandatory. The things that we have already implemented this on such as heart attack patients... there is now a 20% greater survival rate. This also happens to be one of the things that is being so heavily attacked by opponents... it is part of the so called death panels.
Despite the fact that this is not actually an "Obama" plan, he is trying to show you what is in it... I agree with you that he is not very good at it, though he is trying, and that is more than what can be said of any politician in recent history... even the Clinton's did not put this much effort into social reform... I think you may have to go all the way back to the 50's or early 60's to find a greater effort than what is being put forth here.
If you want me to cite all of that stuff I will be more than happy to do so tomorrow, just let me know... and by all means, if you think what I have said is off, point it out.

I am not someone wants to read something so long and boring, only because I can't d that....the moment I start reading something I find boring I start to fade out and my eyes read and by brain doesn't pay attention.
Disabilities are only fun when they can be noticeable. On a New York Subway it's against the law to not offer your seat to someone that is disabled. --fun times doing that ...as I saw with my brother's friend and his cane. Everyone offered their seat and he often refused it. ---but disabilities that are unseen are not fun. They are harder to have fun with and they are usually obnoxious...especially learning ones. I am not slow, I am just someone that can't stay focused on reading if the phrasing is off or retarded and legal as well as political writing is both.
I took courses in paralegal so I had to contend with that, but I did very well in that....so it has its moments.
The only problem I see is that the money is not there to deal with this---is there?

No.... the funding for the bill is there, it falls under the responsibilities of the Senate Finance Committee. The Senate Finance Committee takes the bill that is being proposed and finds a way to finance the bill, they are often the reasons for the biggest cuts in bills or declaring bills not feesable. On this bill they are taking a good chunk of the money from reforming medicare, aka restructuring the way medicare is handled. Currently Medicare oversight is contracted out to the lowest bidder which is often Blue Cross Blue Shield... for every oversight that these contracted companies are able to stop or absolve they get a generous chunk of the "saved" money... hence not really saving medicare any money... this will fall under the new national health organization. The national health organization is part of what scares people about the bill, but it has fail safes as well... tried and true fail safes that are already implemented with medicare patients.
This is kind of a lot, but I will do my best.
When a patient is emitted to a hospital they are assigned a designation based on their symptoms called DRG's for diagnostic related group... for instance if someone is having chest pains... based on this designation they are then run through a list of exams and procedures, these exams and procedures are going to be set in stone by the national health persons... this is not a new practice, with heart patients it is called ACSETS, and the hospitals that have already stated using this procedure for chest pains have seen a 20% increase in heart attack survivors over the last few years... the goal of the legislation is to develop step by step procedures for all DRGs... and the oversight will simply be to assure that doctors are in fact going through the proper steps and insuring that patients are getting the proper care... but people want to blow all that common sense away with scary terminology like death panels... and other ignorance's (not lumping you in with that).
This bill is very well thought out when it comes down to it, and the areas they may need tweaking, well they are designed to be able to be tweaked by the health board.
Does that help Jammer?

i noticed that some people are still not convinced. And it makes me wonder why?
this is what Republican author David Frum concedes;
“I think what happens for a lot of these political fighters [is] they’re like racehorses. The bugle goes and the blood stirs and there’s a fight and you have to join the fight – and I think there are some tactical opportunities the Republicans see... But if the Republicans win, this is not going to be a great victory for individual liberty. It’s going to be a victory for the status quo... What I am concerned about is in the desire to defeat President Obama, the Republicans are going to fossilize a status quo that is unacceptable to them... If you want to hold the line on the growth of government over the next two decades, this system has to be reformed.”

Please President Obama keep it going we need healthcare reform now!
Healthcare is a service NOT a commodey for profit off the pain and suffering of human beings.
This is a moral debate and anytime in our history when we must make change for the better there is a crazy fight. Our country will be a better place to live with public/government healthcare.
And get those insurance companies out of our pockets they are stealing from the doctors and the patients. Last quarter bonus for these insurance companies ranged between 9-30 million dollars for CEO's- and is just one quarter.
We could fund our healthcare with this money alone. - 6 months ago

I'm really confused about what you guys are arguing about here. I see Jammer saying
"If we are important, and he's lying when he says that, then it would be the entire time he was speaking would be about the bill and telling EVERYONE what is in it and why it is important." - But I thought this has been done several times by Obama during many press conferences. Hell, the last time he gave a giant speech about health care no one remembered it because of the Gates/Police Officer ordeal. Is there really confusion about what is in this bill? More importantly, how much responsibility is on the individual to pay attention and read it themselves?
Now you say "1,000+ pages and he can't simplify it so that the simplest of the American Public could understand it? No one in Washington DC cares." I agree, it's long and probably pretty boring. But it seems that simplifying it so the American Public can understand it is exactly what he is trying to do. You said "but this Bill is confusing DOCTORS who spend at least a decade in school." - Who are you talking about?
Overall, like I said, I don't understand what's fundamentally being argued here- that Healthcare reform is bad, or that THIS healthcare reform is bad, or that Obama isn't doing a good job selling it to the public? All of those, none?
From my personal standpoint I think I understand why Obama wants to reform healthcare and some basics on how- the only time it gets really off track are when crazy accusations like "Forced abortions and Euthanasia are coming to Socialist America!" are thrown around as scare tactics.

I want him to care.
To do as he states he is doing instead of just talking about it. I want him to make those that are working and talking about the bill to care....and not be snide about it just because they are talking to those who are not of their party.
THEY are to be the humble ones. THEY should take a beating in selling this and they shouldn't act like people should agree just because it's about health care.
This idea that if you don't agree you don't want health care for all...is retarded.
I want someone who cares to actually show it....and if you ever read about Jesus he cared and he suffered.
I want to see how bad Obama cares. If he doesn't care that bad...then he shouldn't use the world.
He might as well state what he wishes he could - "Do what I say because I'm right and you're wrong" because every time he speaks...that's what he says.
And no he doesn't say OMG...the fact that you like satire isn't ever apparent in anything you post when the joke isn't about conservatives.

I think you misunderstood me. Obviously I wasn't taking you word for word- I don't think Obama is saying "don't listen to republicans" at all, just don't listen to false statements being made by some people. It just so happens that a lot of the myths about health care are coming from extreme conservative groups.
"I want someone who cares to actually show it....and if you ever read about Jesus he cared and he suffered.
I want to see how bad Obama cares. If he doesn't care that bad...then he shouldn't use the world. "
Are you saying that you want Obama to suffer for this?
You said you "Want him to care". I'm willing to bet that a person who ran their campaign on health care reform and is working to reform it as his number one issue as the President cares about it. Do you disagree?

Thank you in particular for your patience. You know as well as I that there is NOTHING President Obama could do that would appease Jammer or the rest of that crowd. If President Obama were to offer to go to Jammer's home and explain his position in person, that STILL wouldn't be enough.
And of course, NONE of these critics can even grasp the concept that none of these bills BELONG to Presidnt Obama. President Obama is not a Member of Congress. He CANNOT introduce legislation for consideration by Congress. NONE of the bills in question were drafted by President Obama. They very much WERE drafted in response to President Obama's request that Congress address the PROBLEMS...gah! Why bother? I can sense the light dimming in their eyes already (those who managed to read this far).
