Underground stations in Sao Paulo, Brazil are being fitted with special enlarged seats to accommodate obese people.

The blue chairs are nearly twice as wide as the normal chairs and can support up to 40 stone without breaking.

The seats are accompanied by signs picturing a rotund customer with the words "Priority chair for obese people".

The seats have been installed in an attempt to encourage larger people to use public transport. But word on the tube is that the seats are already being shunned because the obese are too ashamed to use them.
