A Cairns-based gynaecologist who became the first in Australia to administer the abortion pill RU486 says the Queensland Government has not gone far enough in amending laws governing abortions.State Cabinet has decided to update the Queensland Criminal Code to cover medical, or drug-induced abortions, to give the same legal protection as surgical terminations.
A 19-year-old Cairns woman and her partner are due to face the Cairns Magistrates Court next month after it was alleged the girl smuggled the drug RU486 in from overseas to terminate her pregnancy.
James Cook University Professor Caroline de Costa stopped prescribing the drug in June because of legal concerns and says further changes are needed to Queensland law.
