Would a fat traveller sue EasyJet?

Image...
UPDATE: Original story below was a hoax:

A 55-year-old Italian woman who weighs 15.5 stone was told by EasyJet staff that she was "too fat" to board the plane unless she bought two tickets. Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that she was told to step on scales in front of other passengers but when she refused, they refused to let her on the plane. She's now suing the budget airline for the humiliation they allegedly caused her. Airlines spokesman Thomas Meister apologized and said that EasyJet doesn't have special rules for overweight people. He then added that there is a stated distance between seats and that passengers are expected to buy two tickets if they feel they can't fly comfortably. Perhaps more airlines will follow in the footsteps of United Airlines who announced earlier this year that overweight passengers would have to buy two tickets if they didn't fit their allotted space. Do you think this is fair or discrimination?

    Fair.

If they weigh almost as much as 2 passengers and take up the same amount of space as 2 passengers then they should pay for 2 tickets.

I agree. Fair it is. If they're fat they should pay more. It's all about weight on planes... and if they weigh as much as two people... they should pay for two tickets.

I'm sure the airport staff could have found a private room for her to be weighed in. She was basically being treated like a piece of luggage! Being weighed in front of everyone. Shudder.

Hold on, 15.5 stone? That doesn't seem very fat to me!
(Beth Ditto from the Gossip is 15st and I don't think she looks too big for a plane seat, do you?)

Fair enough if the passenger is morbidly obese and genuinely doesn't fit in their seat, but even still, being weighed in front of a group of other passengers would be terribly humiliating for anyone.

Weird - EasyJet are claiming they looked into the "incident" after the Italian newspaper La Repubblica ran the story. The no-frills airline said they discovered the events never took place.

EasyJet apparently don't require "big-boned" travellers to buy 2 seats, but recommend they do so if they think they need to.

Interesting how believable this story was.

Wait for Ryan Air to issue a press release saying they will make "fat seats" and charge more

    make it standard
but all bags and person on scale, charge for total weight.
a skinny person will be charged more than a fat one with few bags.
    fair

    It's a hoax, but it shouldn't be.

I weigh 80 kilos. If an airline will charge me extra for going over a 10 kilo baggage allowance, why shouldn't they charge extra for someone weighing 100 kilos?

    who cares if it's fake?

fat people should pay more. i don't understand why they would want to cram themselves into an already-small-enough airplane seat, along with smothering the poor soul unlucky enough to be seated next to them.

i find airplanes cramped enough as is. if i had an obese person seated next to me with their excess skin flowing over into my seat area, i surely would not stand for that.

i had a middle seat once between two people who were overflowing (literally) into my seat. so much so that i only had 1/2 a seat. thankfully i'm not as big as they are or i wouldn't have fit. the plane was full, and they couldn't move me.

yes. larger people should have to buy 2 seats. it's isn't discrimination to be concerned for passengers who aren't fat who would like to have a full seat to themselves. it's discrimination to the fit people to force them to sit with fat rolls overlapping their seats and touching them. you ought to be able to sit in a seat without feeling like a squashed bug.
