LOL"Can I have a fraplatlappuccino, two and half pumps of vanilla syrup, extra foam, a touch of caramel on top, skim milk, oh... and whipped cream too, extra hot and venti"
Are you kidding me?
People would have easier time learning the periodic table of the elements.
This is clownish.
10% of their coffee is indeed fair trade but it is not enough!
It's not even organic!
Do you really want to pay three to five dollars for a cup of blahtrappuccino?
Did we all just go crazy?
"Fair trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, which seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions"
"Many coffee farmers receive prices for their harvest that can be less than the costs of production, forcing them into a cycle of poverty and debt. They are often forced to sell to intermediaries who pay them a fraction of the market price, generally between 10-50 cents per pound.
Fair trade coffee currently sells for a minimum of $1.26 per pound.
This money goes directly to coffee farmers, not to predatory intermediaries."
From Organicconsumers.org
Do we really want to support this form of slavery?
Starbucks supports High fructose corn syrup as well, present in their super choice of flavored syrups. It comes from genetically engineered seeds (of death), it is number one public enemy.
Do we really want to support Deforestation as well?
Organic coffee, fair trade certified is grown beneath the tropical rain forest canopy, without the use of pesticides or fertilizers.
It is shade-grown under a canopy of trees thus preventing wildlife destruction and minimizing soil erosion.
Now it is not shade grown anymore as nature intended it, monocropping and “sun cultivation” techniques, introduced in the 70's to increase yield plantations, are since then destroying these forests, the wildlife and contaminating the soil with chemicals.
We are paying a high price, financially and above all environmentally, all for this fraplatlappuccino.

My middle of the road Democrat Votin', Whole Foods Shopping yuppie friend thinks that Starbucks is the best thing since sliced bread.
I tried explaining to him that the "fair trade" was just greewashing, but he wouldn't have any of it.

love it! I have never spent a dime @ starbucks and don't intend to. I can make better @ home and save the difference. They pay their entry level employees well (where I live, it's $2/hour over minimum) ....that is why the coffee is so expensive.

I used to work for Starbucks ( I was young and did not understand how horrible they are) they also claim to recycle but when I worked there that was NEVER done, tons of plastic milk/cow juice containers were tossed in the trash, and the drinks are waaaaay overpriced.... I have not gone back since quitting..

branding, branding, branding......
that's what it's all about.
once you've built the brand you can sell crap on cardboard and call it an appetizer. as long as it has starbucks logo on it, it must be good.
it's time to get over our hyperc-onsumerism, learn where things come from and their ultimate cost.
good post! - 6 months ago
