A Creative Commons License Is The Ultimate Music Promotion Tool

Image...
I have been thinking about the challenges facing artists in bringing their music to a wide audience. While it is true that the internet has opened up many doors in this respect there are some new challenges that were created by this new promotion and distribution platform. One is being lost in a sea of literally millions of other musicians who all have essentially equal opportunity in the digital universe. Another is how to get your music to cross over between digital and traditional promotion avenues such as broadcast radio and TV.

I found this article last night and it offers some insight into using the Creative Commons license platform to promote music. While it does present some interesting ideas in relation to digital promotion and distribution via Creative Commons it doesn't really address opportunities that might be created to get indie music onto broadcast channels via Creative Commons and that might be the best possible use of the concept....

Music on TV no longer exist! & creative commons is great, but it has it's limits! with the industry in the shape it's in, for artist in genres like industrial, or Ambient Rock ,have to work 10 times harder to get ANY recognition even on MySpace!!! So the industry is really screwing over tons of musicians majorly!!! Some artist that were able to produce stuff for major labels a few years ago were dropped from those labels & basically forced to put out their own stuff any way they can!!! Labels are going real deaf too!!! They are signing people based 100% on looks in some cases! Can this problem be fixed? Well...The musicians themselves really have to talk a stand & say they aren't going to put up with such crap!!!

    Hi Nuclear,

Yep I agree, the labels are about what they have always been about $$$. They market what sells and they keep the pool at the top small to maximize revenue off each band.

Obviously indie artists can't match the money that the big labels put into promotion but I think there are other ways to do it which could open new markets while allowing the artists to keep control of their art. I am going to be writing up a blog tonight on the stuff I have been thinking about and will post it here sometime, probably by tomorrow. Would love to have your opinion on it then...

in the world of electronic music, a lot of producers are making music specifically for creative commons, as a side biz to compliment their production and djing
