LGBT milestone in Uruguay

Recently, Uruguay legalized homosexual adoption, becoming the first South American nation to do so. The bill passed 17-6 in the Uruguayan senate. The first leftwing president in Uruguay, Tabare Vasquez, has been making progress for progressive LGBT rights, such as authorizing civil unions and access to military schools, although facing opposition from the Roman Catholic Church. This progression stands Uruguay out from its South American neighbors, and sets an example on an international level. Senator Margarita Percovich was quoted as saying: “It is a right for the boys and the girls, not a right for the adults. It streamlines the adoption process and does not discriminate.”
In the past decade, gays and lesbians have won the right to adoption in various European and North American states and territories, as well as South Africa, Israel and parts of Australia.

    • I know many people who were brought up in gay households who, to quote, "have a sense of what the truth is". There is nothing different between someone raised in a gay versus a straight household. Maybe it's happier even, I don't know from experience. If a person wants to be a responsible parent than they should be allowed, no matter their sexuality. Congratulations Uruguay.

    • Awwwww! It seems like the simplest concepts go over people's heads. A person's a person, no matter how gay! They deserve the same rights and chances.

    • That's so cool that homosexual children can now be adopted in Uruguay. It makes me want to go there just so I can adopt a newborn baby homosexual.

    • this is good to read... at least some countries are coming out of the modern dark ages... where the bible/quran/etc is used to justify bigotry and hatred...

Just because you refuse to understand things doesn't mean these kids are screwed. there are tons of kids out there that need homes and stupid things like what you say are keeping them jumping from foster home to foster home. i feel sorry for people who feel that there better off in foster care. maybe one day you'll understand that every ones the same, one day.

emarston you will never get through to someone with a very biased bigoted and conservative worldview that would say something like this... its as absurd as when they say that homosexuals shouldnt adopt cuz they are teaching children to be homosexuals.. look at how many straight parents produce homosexual children... if their homophobia and hatred wasnt so sad it'd actually be funny...

"look at how many straight parents produce homosexual children"

Well it's probably true that straight parents produce more homosexual children. Consider that most parents are straight, so it's no surprise that they would produce the most homosexual children.

But do homosexual parents proportionately raise more children who identify as homosexual?

I found something that goes on about this:

"Studies thus far find between 8% and 21% of homosexually parented children ultimately identify as non-heterosexual. For comparison purposes, approximately 2% of the general population are non-heterosexual."

Just putting some ideas out here folks.

"who the fuck cares about numbers?"

Well, I was going to ask if you enjoy the subject of mathematics, but I guess I won't.

Besides that, I never considered gayness and being an asshole who spreads hate as being mutually exclusive.

    • Actually, I think you meant to use the term "regressive". I feel sorry for the kids involved, especially with the harassment they will have to endure. Growing up is tough enough, no need to complicate it further.
