Back 2 School time! We all know what that means: awesome loft parties, lunchroom fashion shows and acting like a rich celebrity. Ugh! So stressful! I wish it was summer!

Target Women is a recurring segment on Current TV's weekly television show, infoMania. In each episode of Target Women, Sarah Haskins takes a look at the often-ridiculous way the media reaches out to women.

infoMania is a half-hour satirical news show that airs on Current TV. The show puts a comedic spin on the 24-hour chaos and information overload brought about by the constant bombardment of the media. Hosted by Conor Knighton and co-starring Brett Erlich, Sarah Haskins, Ben Hoffman, Bryan Safi and Sergio Cilli, the show airs on Thursdays at 10 pm Eastern and Pacific Times and can be found online at http://current.com/infomania/ or on Current TV. • Oh man...what the hell! Thanks...at least my little brother is into manga and nintendo wii. I guess teaching kids how to become hipsters is the main focus of the advertisement industry. I bet you all of those ad junkies are not even or were a hipster. lolz.

    • Hmmm... I don't know. I'm on the fence on this one. Sure the things in these commercials aren't important and are materialistic but what else is there for girls? Boys get video games, action figures and water guns but girls are supposed to have nothing? Everything for girls like dolls and fashion is seen as bad. So tell me what are they supposed to do without this stuff? Read all day? Read all day while their little brothers get to have fun? It's a double standard if you ask me.

I don't think that it's neccessarily the products themselves that are seen as bad, so much as the way their advertised to children.
Also, there are tons of dolls that aren't all bratz-style freaky, and you can look good without looking trashy, so I don't think that anyone can say that all products for girls is bad.
On the other hand, can't girls play with video games too? And some people (me included) would find a day of reading quite fun. Personally, I want to see more products aimed at everyone instead of saying 'oh, this products only for ladies', y'know. TTYLOTI :P

    • it never stops amazing me how advertising emphasizes the inadequacies we feel about ourselves and each other... the context you put that in is sadly disturbing about our culture and society as a whole... this is why I'm a hippie... thanks

speaking full sentences is more common than you'd think. Not all has gone to hell quite yet, seeing that there are more people complaining about the sate of culture, in the EIA (everything in anagrams) generation, than there are actually are participating in it.

Although I must say, hearing a college professor say "No writing these papers with abbreviations and short hand. This is a formal college paper, not an informal text message to your friend. I can't stress this enough, you will lose points if you turn in a paper written like that." Is a very scary indicator as to how bad the problem is.

Yet, like I said before, It's not everybody. It just seems that way cause that's the demographic they are targeting. In reality, more people don't like this turn to informal anagrams as a means of communication then those who support it.

I don't care to look it up, but I'm sure it's on urban dictionary.

    • Question.
Forgive my ignorance, but what the FUCK does "bffaeae" mean?

Maybe if I know what it means, I won't feel so bad for wanting to strangle that little girl to death with my bare hands.

    • This is very important and NOT funny! The INDUNSTRY leaders are targeting are children and we are just turning our head or just sticking them in the sand parents, I mean come on!!! Most parents just give their kids what they want to get them to 'shut up' or out of some type of 'guilt' from todays problems. Which God calls it the "Sins of the Father", it all passes from generation to generation. No School uniforms will NOT help! Kids will still make fun of the other kids and have 'Clicks' so on and so forth...as my Mama used to say(God Bless her 1/5/42-10/14/08 Paddy E. Faulkner). We've got to taake hold of our kids before they do and say NO and MEAN it with LOVE and RESPECT and DISIPLINE and not let anyone else do your job for you. GOD PROMESSED HIS RETURN!!!!! Look where the state of the world is going. WHAT GOES AROUND-COMES AROUND-THE WORLD TURNS...VENGENCE IS MINE SAYETH THE LORD....GIVE BACK WHAT THE LOCUST DEVOURD.. They are not all just metaphores GOD uses in the BIBLE!!! HE SAID THEM FOR A REASON.
FOR THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH>We are as a whole killing this planet! That Applies to the Book of Revalations. LOVE YOU ALL!!!! GOD BLESS!

yeah...well...did God promised that to you? didn't think so. Whi did he promise to..?! There are no locusts, bloodrivers or any of that. It's just the economic crissis. Isn't that enough for you? And if the parents are so stupid buying things for their kids just to shut'em up...well...GOD BLESS THE CAPITALISM !!!!!!!!! OH YEAH...AND STOP USING CAPSLOCK SO MUCH. THAKS!!!!!

      PS: ...try watching Religulous. "Inlightens"...

um, well minus the god stuff...marketing to kids is a huge business and not exactly something new...you should watch the Frontline special "Merchants of Cool." it's all about this topic.

Why do good Christians always have to muck up their good points with screaming, fire, locusts and naming their deceased family in the middle of a sentence?

Perpetuating stereotypes. You're doing more harm than good.

    • I remember even as a kid I was never into shopping for school clothing since it was hot in the beginning of the school year. I was interested in buying a new bathing suit when I was taught swimming during school time or a trapper keeper. lol :)

    • I don't understand kids and their fame envy. Also, Hudgens at least isn't pretending she can actually sing, so I suppose that's cool.

Once someone told me I dress like a seven year old when I was twenty-one... compliment much? hyyyeahhh.

THANK YOU! I'm glad someone else notices it!
America markets to it's young, uber-impressionable girls like this, but when I bring up one of these little tweeners being "hot", I'm treated like a pervert. What gives!?

    • TheCatalystPoet:

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing "hot" about it. I find it disturbing mostly. It's like this: I'm a grown man, so I don't need to be looking at that, and young males don't need to learn how to objectify girls at that or any age. Not to mention it's teaching these little girls the wrong way to look at beauty/attractiveness, which goes into us passing along humanities blatant unhappiness with ourselves, but that's a whole other discussion for another time.

    • Sarah you sexy thing,
Once again you've evicerated the shallow, manipulative, trashy way corporate America tries to shove unmitigated tripe and nonsense down our throats. What's sad is that these kids buy into the bullshit that's spit at them 24/7.They are probably the most marketed generation of children since the inception of advertising. Joe Stalin is probably kicking himself in the ass for wasting all his time on brainwashing when all he need to do was hire a couple of souless and cynical advertising agencies to get people to think the way he wanted them to.

      Uniforms are worse.
First there's all the fuss about who had her skirt shortened the most, who bought a tie at what brand (oh yes, there are brands specifically for uniforms) and which brand has the vest with the most dark shade of magenta.
Then teachers start to stand guard at the gates of the school because the tailoring and "individualizing" of the uniforms gets way out of control, and since there's a limit to how much you can pick on about uniforms, people obsess about hair and earrings and fucking nametags on the jackets.
Worst of all, since people get only a few chances every year to actually DRESS for school, on the occasions when those chances come it's REALLY a fashion show. Like on field trips or school summer camps. It gets ridiculously serious. It's almost an equivalent to having three or four proms a school year.
The best solution would be just dropping out of school for good. There is no way to escape the chaos.
