Xiu Qiong Duan, 68, told the SINA Beijing news agency she woke up in the middle of the night to find the snake clinging to the wall of her bedroom.
"I woke up and heard a strange scratching sound ... at first I thought it was thieves" she said.
"I turned on the light and saw this monster working its way along the wall using his claw."
Ms Duan, from Suining in southwest China, said she then grabbed a shoe and beat the snake to death.
She reportedly preserved its body in a bottle of alcohol which she gave to the Life Sciences Department at China's West Normal University in Nanchang.
Snake expert Long Shuai said the discovery of the creature, which is 40cm long and the thickness of a little finger, was "truly shocking".
"We won't know the cause until we've conducted an autopsy," she said.

This thing looks like it crawled out of my nightmares. I also hypothesize that industrial waste is the culprit. There used to be a nuclear waste site across the river from my house that I blame for my dog giving birth to a mutated puppy. She ate the deformed puppy alive. It was pretty disturbing.

My theory.

"The LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done thus, thou art cursed about all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life" -Bible.
A snake was born with a hand, able to grasp and push itself up from the earth. He was not damned to slither all his life; he could painstakingly push himself up, out of the dust, and hobble. What does this say about the punishment of God on this earthy devil?
What does this say about his attention upon the world? Or the devil's? In my mind, this evil mutation can say only two things:
1) God has forsaken us, allowing humanity's tempter to escape God's mystical shackles. Our behavior so insulted the deity's pure sensibilities that he has turned away from us and, after the Great Flood debacle, no longer wishes to try yet again. The end of days is coming, as evil is no longer reigned in by God's power.
Prayer is now futile, and will fall on deaf ears. God has given people over to themselves and the Devil, and no amount of cheap, timely repentance could convince an immaculate being to reconsider what must seem a very obvious decision. Hatred and exclusionary practices have consumed religion and the world, and now we are damned, no power to create angles on our shoulders, no being sending visions and lessons, keeping evil at bay, saving us after death.
2) The final battle between good and evil on Earth has begun. God has not and will never forsake a humanity so devoted to doing what they believe to be good. We are already being punished for being able to create such ideas of good and evil, which the legged snake tricked us into accepting into our previously simple, submitting minds... our famously just God must recognize that our wars, hate, apathy, and judgements are the natural result of that original sin, and would not re-punish a people that are still suffering.
No, the snake instead is the Devil's symbol that the great battle has finally begun. He sent his influence into the egg as it gestated, cooking up the DNA necessary to mutating God's plan for the serpent, and the chime was sounded for humanity to hear and understand. Why would the Devil choose now to declare war on goodness? Look at the people. Is there any reaction to his declaration? We are so distanced from the Word that we don't even consider to link this evil mutation with the eternal struggle between good and evil. "The greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing the world he didn't exist."
We must pay attention and close our hearts to evil and thought, sending our energies and belief up to God, who is even now fighting for our everlasting salvation and safety.
