Hyerconcious Hypochondriasis

years, expecting to be seen,
diagnosed.
Feverous hands rest at a clammy arms length,
quarantined within well guarded laps
In order to avoid spreading affection.
Everybody here is a hypochondriac,
loitering in some invisible line,
waiting for a triage to record
feelings on a precise scale
The doctor warms up his stethoscope;
beckons the patient
couple into a small dark room
To examine a feared state of mind;
a conflicting contagion.
The physical
is standard procedure.
Frequent, casual.
She opens wide
Throat sore with silence,
unfastens celibate jaws,
thirsty with a dehydrated appetite,
gulping the wet, succulent air down.
Small screams escape from an exhale;
“aaaaaaa”
The tongue is still
beneath the depressor
He opens his ears
listens to steel intrusion;
undergoes a visual exam,
pupils accepting the misleading light,
trying not to blink.
(this could be cut...?)
Spineless gowns
bring flapping tension
to a couple of freshly exposed asses,
bubbling to the surface of
an air that is cold.
An antiseptic aroma
Fills the space of the yawning door
of the exam room;
Lingering atop the slick , sterile floor,
lacquering potential falls.
Gagging ensues after exposure
to the potent odor of sweet chemicals
All too common in such a place
Where so many have suffered
Some have died
Some wish to die
In this shitty hospital
Where I see you naked
A professional voice
Releases us
Must not be serious
To escape such admittance

This is actually an extended metaphor of unspoken passion between two people, that is finally explored after many years, only on a physical level however, unable to take it seriously, hence the ending, in which neither patient is admitted, they are both released to go their seperate ways. I used the waiting room as a place to harbor these emotions...waiting for something to happen. Hypochondria is "the unwarranted fear of something serious (a disease)." I thought there was an ironic relation.

Very insightful.
I personally don't have hypochondria and know little of it, but you make it painfully vivid and bring me a new aspect of the disorder.
Hope you get out of this vice and don't let it control you. - 5 months ago
