If you needed stem cells implanted in your brain to treat a disorder, you might be able to just snort them instead. New details from a University of Minnesota researcher's initial tests show the stem cells actually make it to the brain when snorted rather than implanted through surgery. Talk about a medical improvement.

The research, conducted by Willaim Frey of the University and his colleagues in Germany, shows promise for other drugs that don't usually penetrate the blood-brain barrier, according to the U.S. News and World Report story. If the cells are suspended in fluid, they quickly reach the brain fully intact. The research was recently published in the European Journal of Cell Biology.

How did they conduct the research? Having mice sniff dropped of adult rat stem cells. Sounds like a task in itself. More from U.S. News and World Report:
An hour later, rat stem cells were clearly visible in the mice's brains. To make sure the ability to penetrate the brain wasn't limited just to those cells, they also had rats snort a second type of cells, from human brain tumors. These cells also penetrated the brain within an hour.

They likely traveled to the brain along the olfactory (smell) nerves through small holes in the cribriform plate, a thin horizontal part of the skull at the base of the brain. They also likely traveled inside fluid-filled spaces that surround blood vessels passing from the nose to the brain.

Just above the cribriform plate, olfactory nerves connect to the olfactory bulbs, two round extensions of the brain that process smell. Stem cells were found in the olfactory bulbs and also in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and other brain regions.
Stem cell treatments for brain disorders aren't approved yet by the Food and Drug Administration, but researchers hope this easy-to-administer method could help advance research into possible treatments for head injuries, stroke, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Huntington's disease.

    • When it comes to repairing neurons and synaptic connections, that's a bit different than a simple heart tissue repair. I've been in some accidents and also some prolonged poisonings by over-dosed prescription drugs. Some of those brain cells were destroyed, perhaps forever. But they left an empty space so other nearby brain cells had room to grow. That's why my claims of having many zero pollution engines and two anti-gravity systems are more than claims... hehehehe In essence, I CHEATED.

    • Well, if a person is HEALTHY their own body will rush stem cells from the abdominal fat up to the damaged heart muscle via the blood delivery stream. But the people having heart attacks may not be in that level of efficient health so they need this new crutch. But this here is the problem, that people who use crutches never get off of them. Or in this case, they never get to feel their body super healing itself on the fly.

      I have, and it's a truly glorious feeling to heal once again real fast, like you're 5 years old all over again. Remember? You had a cut on your finger and watched it heal within hours? Well, that's what I was able to achieve => RAMMING SPEED.

    • Defo gravity man! Its almost as if its trying to be proven that stem cells just dont work, eh...uv already told us they do!!! Oh and did the scientific folk not already know the effectiveness of nasal administrated drugs? vics, kennel cough vaccine etc.would stem cell nasal administration not be common sense? How much did it cost to find this out?

    • Your body already does it. Stomach fat contains a massive amount of extra stem cells. After a heart attack the fat-based stem cells are directed to heal the heart.

      They just found a way to make money off it. Extract the stem cells from the fat (your own fat, totally compatible), put it in some squirt bottles and sell it to ya.

    • Of course normal people won't get it. If they did you'd have people able to see like a hawk, swoop like an eagle (on the basketball court), smell good-looking women scent a mile away, and stalk til they're captured.

      This is definitely worthy of a black box.
