Ten Things You Need To Know About Iran

Belief: Iran is aggressive and has threatened to attack Israel, its neighbors or the U.S.

Reality: Iran has not launched an aggressive war modern history (unlike the U.S. or Israel), and its leaders have a doctrine of "no first strike." This is true of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as well as of Revolutionary Guards commanders.

Belief: Iran is a militarized society bristling with dangerous weapons and a growing threat to world peace.

Reality: Iran's military budget is a little over $6 billion annually. Sweden, Singapore and Greece all have larger military budgets. Moreover, Iran is a country of 70 million, so that its per capita spending on defense is tiny compared to these others, since they are much smaller countries with regard to population. Iran spends less per capita on its military than any other country in the Persian Gulf region with the exception of the United Arab Emirates.

Belief: Iran has threatened to attack Israel militarily and to "wipe it off the map."

Reality: No Iranian leader in the executive has threatened an aggressive act of war on Israel, since this would contradict the doctrine of 'no first strike' to which the country has adhered. The Iranian president has explicitly said that Iran is not a threat to any country, including Israel.

Belief: But didn't President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad threaten to "wipe Israel off the map?"

Reality: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did quote Ayatollah Khomeini to the effect that "this Occupation regime over Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time" (in rezhim-e eshghalgar-i Qods bayad as safheh-e ruzgar mahv shavad). This was not a pledge to roll tanks and invade or to launch missiles, however. It is the expression of a hope that the regime will collapse, just as the Soviet Union did. It is not a threat to kill anyone at all.

Belief: But aren't Iranians Holocaust deniers?

Reality: Some are, some aren't. Former president Mohammad Khatami has castigated Ahmadinejad for questioning the full extent of the Holocaust, which he called "the crime of Nazism." Many educated Iranians in the regime are perfectly aware of the horrors of the Holocaust. In any case, despite what propagandists imply, neither Holocaust denial (as wicked as that is) nor calling Israel names is the same thing as pledging to attack it militarily.

Belief: Iran is like North Korea in having an active nuclear weapons program, and is the same sort of threat to the world.

Reality: Iran has a nuclear enrichment site at Natanz near Isfahan where it says it is trying to produce fuel for future civilian nuclear reactors to generate electricity. All Iranian leaders deny that this site is for weapons production, and the International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly inspected it and found no weapons program. Iran is not being completely transparent, generating some doubts, but all the evidence the IAEA and the CIA can gather points to there not being a weapons program. The 2007 National Intelligence Estimate by 16 U.S. intelligence agencies, including the CIA and the Defense Intelligence Agency, assessed with fair confidence that Iran has no nuclear weapons research program. This assessment was based on debriefings of defecting nuclear scientists, as well as on the documents they brought out, in addition to U.S. signals intelligence from Iran. While Germany, Israel and recently the U.K. intelligence is more suspicious of Iranian intentions, all of them were badly wrong about Iraq's alleged Weapons of Mass Destruction and Germany in particular was taken in by Curveball, a drunk Iraqi braggart.

The rest wouldn't fit.

    • "i recognize iran has yet to initiate war
equaly i recognize that iran supports (militarily those who do) and those who they support employ terror tactics without apprehension."

The US has supported despotic regimes that foster terrorism for decades and still do.

      Libya
      Saudi Arabia
      Jordan
      Colombia
      Pakistan

..to name a few off the top of my head

**Arno Mayer, Emeritus Professor of History at Princeton University, has stated that "since 1947 America has been the chief and pioneering perpetrator of 'preemptive' state terror, exclusively in the Third World and therefore widely dissembled."[5] Noam Chomsky also argues that "Washington is the center of global state terrorism and has been for years."[6] Chomsky has characterized the tactics used by agents of the U.S. government and their proxies in their execution of U.S. foreign policy — in such countries as Nicaragua — as a form of terrorism and has also described the U.S as "a leading terrorist state."[7]

After President George W. Bush began using the term "War on Terrorism", Chomsky stated in an interview:[7][8]

The U.S. is officially committed to what is called "low-intensity warfare"... If you read the definition of low-intensity conflict in army manuals and compare it with official definitions of "terrorism" in army manuals, or the U.S. Code, you find they're almost the same.

    • i differ in that im not sure there actually is a concensus. of course a zionist organization will tell the zionist serving perspective as iranians tell the iranian serving perspective.
my perspective is based on the facts at hand.
i recognize iran has yet to initiate war
equaly i recognize that iran supports (militarily those who do) and those who they support employ terror tactics without apprehension.
sure iran has the right to develope just as every other nation does.
but not outside of the rules that every nation adheres to especially without even seeking an exemption. it shows a lack of basic respect to the global community (and militarily) a great threat. deterance only works if everyone ashares the same intent.
iran makes violent overtures that could mean many things. just as much as it can be seen as not threatening israel it can just as reasonably be seen as a direct threat to israel. in evaluating all the info not allowing one agenda to supercede another i side in this endevour with the western perspective
      sorry. high.

    • Ok freecrack the consensus is that it's just more hypothetical spin. I just read it on the homepage of AIPAC. It just says that Iran could possibly maybe have the "data" for a nuclear bomb sometime down the road perhaps ten years or so from now.

    • freecrack:

Let me put it this way. Here's what we know.
Iran has not attacked a country in hundreds of years.
Contrary to neocon assertions, Iran has never threatened Israel.

      Form the link:
"President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did quote Ayatollah Khomeini to the effect that "this Occupation regime over Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time" (in rezhim-e eshghalgar-i Qods bayad as safheh-e ruzgar mahv shavad).
This was not a pledge to roll tanks and invade or to launch missiles, however. It is the expression of a hope that the regime will collapse, just as the Soviet Union did. It is not a threat to kill anyone at all."

What's more, the consensuss is that Iran does not have a weapon as this juncture.
      Pakistan does. India does.
They have threatened one another numerous times and have been at war with one another in the recent past.
Israel has from 150-200 nuclear weapons. They have attacked numerous countries in the past ten years. Israel has threatened Iran on numerous occasions as recently as last month.

If Iran ever becomes a global threat, which they are not at this time, they will be dealt with accordingly.

    • Recent Media Report on Iran

      http://www.iaea.org/NewsCenter/MediaAdvisory/2009/MA200919.html

With respect to a recent media report, the IAEA reiterates that it has no concrete proof that there is or has been a nuclear weapon programme in Iran.

At the Board of Governors´ meeting on 9 September 2009, Director General Mohamed ElBaradei warned that continuing allegations that the IAEA was withholding information on Iran are politically motivated and totally baseless.

The Agency receives information from a variety of sources that may have relevance to the implementation of safeguards. All such information is critically assessed by a team of experts working collectively in accordance with the Agency´s practices.

The IAEA reiterates that all relevant information and assessments that have gone through the above process have already been provided to the IAEA Board of Governors in reports of the Director General.

    • never accused you of believing it. im trying to get you to clarify what "chosen" (as of your assumption) means.
because those who do believe in that so called crap (keep insulting people and question why they flag you) understand the word "chosen" to mean chosen to recieve the ten commandments and keep them holy.
so im trying to figure out:
a)-why you are referencing it in a story that has nothing to do with the ten commandments?
b)-are you using the word "chosen" out of its context?
c)- does "chosen" mean something to you other than the ten commandments?

    • yup chosen to recieve the ten commandments.
what does that have to do with anything.
if anything it creates an idea of the people able to handle the greatest responsability load.
if you think chosen means anything else aside from that you are sadly mistaken and making assumptions about a people based on one word taken out of context or improperly defined.

    • Israel should be the only country in the Middle East allowed to have nuclear weapons. Hell, they were chosen by God. That's totally fair... Right?

    • if we get involved its not because of israel, its because of our interests. just the same as france isnt pissed on behalf of israel niether is england.
israel fought against the british for indepenance(never asking for help from us)
the 6 day war (no help from us)
yom kippur war(no help from us)
intefada 1 and 2 (no help from us)
in fact the majority of israels military actions have been in direct opposition to our policies.
in this case israel france england and the us just happen to have similar interest.
the soviets are getting on board aswell as china.
irans nuclear capabilities are not just an israeli issue its a global one regardless of other policies.

    • but the point is no one is actualy talking about going to war. at least no one representing israeli policy or us policy is talking about war. just muslum reactionaries.
the us, france, israel and england are saying irans behavior will have consiquences. wich could be condemnation, sanctions, bombing raids, or war.
why of the options is war what you derive? especially seeing as this situation has come up previously and was resolved without war?
if any military action is going to occur, the israelis are the ones who wish to initiate it, so israeli soldiers would be at risk not us, french, or english.

    • The nuclear development is the problem. Pretty much everything hinges on that regardless of all other factors. I AM NOT SAYING that it necessarily should,....just that it does.

    • israel asking the us to allow israeli bomber jets to fly in us controled airspace is a far cry from losing american lives. in fact its the opposite. israel is asking to do it not asking someone else to do it.if any lives are at risk they are israeli lives.
by the same rational that iran has yet to start a war israel hasnt either. israel attacks terrorist cells that happen to be in other countries. the reason israel attacks them is in retaliation or self defense from terrorists supplied by (wait for it) iran.
but in the end iran isnt allowed to have nukes(by decrea of the world) and they are trying anyway its just that simple. just as it was in syria just as it was in iraq

    • Interesting. I myself have really never viewed Iran as much of a threat and all the saber rattling going on in the GOP does not impress me much either.
