This was very interesting up until around the 32 minute mark when he made the comment along the lines of: "I find it hard to believe that we evolved from fish." That's when I stopped the video.
What an idiot. I was a Mos Def fan in the late 90's/early 2000's, but he fell off harder than DMX. I was watching this thinking maybe he has redeemed himself with this new album. Musically, yes. But sorry, I just can't forgive that kind of idiocy. If he were to say "I find it hard to believe God exists," he would be crucified. Maybe I'm just mad at how society lets people say stupid things yet does nothing to correct them.
How can I give any credibility to his supposed 'intelligent' rhymes when he can say something so ignorant and uninformed?
Again, what a stupid thing to say.

I really enjoyed this. He has so much to say and he can sing. He talks about more than just bitches and money. There is some depth to his music.
Very talented individual. - 1 month ago

Love Mos - I just need him to rap more than he sings. His rhymes are silly. I know artists are constantly evolving, but damn. Had he just rapped solely on his last few albums, I woulda bought 'em all. BTW - "Black on Both Sides" is a classic.

Awesome episode, like it ^^
The best songs (IMO) : Perfect timing, The Beggar, The Panties, Life Is Real, Lifetime, Wahid, Priority....
It's more interesting than an episode with an artist in his studio/stage and backstage.

I enjoyed this because it proves that real hip hop still exists even if you have to go half way around the world to have true people enjoy it compared to what is being played on our radios today. I liked to get to know what was behind the true hip hop artist eyes as well.

All credit to Mos Def, I think he is great, and he is true to his hip hop roots. However, I thought that this embeded sucked. It was so boring. For example, when they showed Mos Def shopping for clothes, that was cool, showing him looking for clothes for ten mins straight was boring. I felt like I was watching project runway. the blue jacket was a little :Thiller-ish." Nothing wrong with that, but the writing on the back of it made it really Bunk-0. Oh yeah and I really felt like it was going to show more live action, I felt like they showed the wrong parts of the film, they could have cut somethings added other things, and it would have been great!

I have always loved Mos Def but this just makes me realize why I love him and his music so much......
He is so real and unlike many mainstream artists out there, he will not allow himself to do one thing musically...He doesn't accept limitations...He goes above and beyond them, which should inspire people. I just love how embedded captured how his music is a part of him and who he is as a man apart from his music...I just love embedded and what current tv stands for in general...Long live documentaries like this....REAL INFO is what this is...One LOVE!

"When speaking, Mos seems to be incapable of expressing what he really wants to say. And no, not because he doesn't have the vocab. It just seems that language is incapable of communicating this guy's message."
Exactly what I thought. Now I can;t say I don't like Kanye and Jay-z but man they have never let such an impression on me like Mos Def and this entire episode of Embedded has. It was from beginning to end and eye-opening mental thought diverting experience. I can't listen to normal mainstream hip hop anymore like I used to cause of "Casa bey" alone. That beat is so unorthodox yet slightly familiar it deserves to be played way more than "stanky leg".
Plus I have a serious serious love jones for japan. Ever since I saw shibuya square and all the architecture I was amazed enthralled and needed to go there. i have Have Have to now after seeing how amazing it is just on a day to day level.

I'm watching this guy and I'm completely amazed by just how brilliant and creative his mind is.
When speaking, Mos seems to be incapable of expressing what he really wants to say. And no, not because he doesn't have the vocab. It just seems that language is incapable of communicating this guy's message.
You're the man, Mos. Keep it going.
P.S. That kid with the bike that greeted Mos Def during his outro? Crazy timing that was.

Awsome premiere. I hope the rest of the episode are this good. My pops has been to Japan to I was actually able to get him to watch something about hip hop.
I have always repsected Mos alot as an artist but I just have to say I agree with his brother, that jacket is hideous.

Mighty Mos! I really enjoyed that. I went to Japan for the first time in January and this video reminded me of how much fun and bewilderment I experienced over there. Hey atarikg actually there is quite a plethora of songs in the genre that touch on those topics you mentioned. I hope you can come across some of them and perhaps understand the mechanics of why you have only been exposed to the 'fast-food hip hop'. Peace!

Embedded with mos def was a truly a great piece of work. The production was great and i didn't want this show to end. I thought it was great when he was talking about how he was inspired to write his new album. I own his first album and the blackstar album and that was it, well until i watched embedded that is. First thing I did the day after watching was go buy the new album and man am I glad I did it's like nothing else out right now and is truly great.

I don't understand people who loves Hip Hop.Okay that's their pleasure okay but for example I love Japanese cultural music and those music are way better than today's modern hip hop thing. I think modernism at music is nothing but ruining the real meaning of music. Drugs, sex and violence are main subject of hip hop. I have never seen such a hip hop which tries to touch upon war, child abuse or another bad thing happening around us, only thing that hip hop and its followers love woman, sex, drugs, fight mainly immoral things. This is what I am seeing and I pity this music style. There are lots of hip hop music but none of them will be remembered 2-3 months later because they are consumed like a food and thrown away right after. For example look at classical music, they are still being listened by most of people even though they were composed a century ago because they are really something which require talent.
I hope teens will understand one day how much valuable the cultural music and classical music is.
Thanks.

atarikg:
First off, BIG UP to the creators Embedded for even highlighting an artist like the Mighty Mos Def!! It's always good to see Hip-hop artists like him getting noticed.
Secondly, atarikg it seems to me that you haven't quite listened to that much Hip-hop not to mention Mos's music. Just like any other genre of music, Hip-hop is only as great as the artist who creates it. There is a cornucopia of artist within the culture with an even wider variety of subject matter then just "woman, sex, drugs, fight mainly immoral things" as you put it. All I'm saying is do a little bit more research before you go generalizing an entire culture.

I do generally agree with you but may I ask, are you commenting on the majority of hip hop you see on TV or the real hip hop that's overshadowed and unearthed by many.
MF Doom
Rakim
Nas
Jedi Mind Tricks
Common
Kanye West (College Dropout - Late Reg)are some artists that do (arguably more than) touch on the subjects you talked about.

two words, lupe fiasco- listen to something like little weapon, song about war, listen to intruder alert song about rape, listen to handcuffs, song about corruption, listen to put you on game, song about the evil in the world, the list goes on, dont exclude a genre based on assumptions, rap is more complex than most people think lil wayne is one kinda rapper, lupe is another... (a lot better ;P)

Wow, just amazing. I never knew about Mos Def because honestly I didn't like the genre, but I can't deny that I don't respect his works now. His performances were amazing, and his commentary kept me in all the way through the journey in Japan. Keep it up Embedded and Current TV! And Mos Def!

Im very happy that CURRENT decided to do this project. Im amazed on how they captured MOS DEF in japan plus the respect that he has from the people in japan. Its not everyday that we get a glimpse into an artists life (in a certain amount of time that they give the camera crew). And they give their side of the story on how music influences their life and what they bring on to the mic.
Whoever created this show...Thank you!

Definitely agree. I consider myself a long time Mos Def fan, but that was like the longest "get to know..." converage I've seen of him. Really hope that there are some hip hop fans who also do production work for TV. That level of hip hop needs to get more coverage.

Shows like this don't come across my radar at all, but Mos Def's tour in Japan was extremely interesting to me. If the production values for the show are as high as they were in the first episode, I'll definitely be checking out Embedded every week.
