This is not new. The Sumerians have stories about a mountain of copper ore that over hundreds of years they eventually completely removed.

i worked briefly at a gold recovery mine in the upper mojave. we had large ponds built from the tailings of old gold mines and filled them with sulfuric acid and water. they were always full of poisoned birds who had tried to cross the desert and stopped for a drink.
