Leonardo da Vinci may have had an Arab heritage, according to Italian researchers who have isolated and reconstructed the Renaissance master's fingerprint.

The fingerprint represents the only biological trace of the Florentine genius, said Luigi Capasso, an anthropologist at Chieti University.

"It is actually the first evidence of Leonardo's corporeality," Capasso told Discovery News.

    • Dermatoglyphics (from ancient Greek derma = "skin", glyph = "carving") is the scientific study of fingerprints. The term was coined by Dr. Harold Cummins, the father of American fingerprint analysis, even though the process of fingerprint identification had already been used for several hundred years.[1] All primates have ridged skin, and it can also be found on the paws of certain mammals and on the tails of some monkey species. In humans and animals, dermatoglyphs are present on fingers, palms, toes, and soles, and give insight into a critical period of embryogenesis, between 4 weeks and 5 months, when the architecture of the major organ systems is developing.

    • I'm sorry, but how in the heck is it possible to determine ones heritage from a fingerprint? If it was DNA, that I could see, but fingerprints form from random patterns that are nor determined by genetics. If fingerprints were determined by genetics then identical twins would have identical fingerprints, but they don't. Identical twins do not have identical fingerprints.

This is like saying a person can identify someones ethnic background by looking at the pattern formed by their capillaries.

    • I've always been interested in his creation. Totally incredible experience to see the portrait hanging there in Paris.
