Hulu to start charging in 2010

At an industry summit in NYC on Oct. 21, News Corp Deputy Chairman Chase Carey revealed that online video hub Hulu will begin charging users for content as soon as 2010, according to Broadcasting and Cable. Carey told reporters that a subscription system is likely, although some content will probably continue to be offered free of charge. “I think a free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of our content. I think what we need to do is deliver that content to consumers in a way where they will appreciate the value,” he said.

    • Well, goodbye hulu, you were fun while you lasted. Clearly these people don't understand the internet. We like things to be free, put as many adds as you want, but make us pay a fee and we'll find it free some place else.

    • How many times do companies have to make this mistake before they realize that charging for content *doesn't work*? The Internet giveth, and the Internet taketh away. :(

Actually charging for JUST content *doesn't work* they also have to provide a more valuable service to be worth it.

I put up with the commercials because they are less than what is on TV and it is on demand so that makes it worth it compared to that.

But charging a fee isn't worth it because of the less quality resolution and the streaming issues that make the video worse than just buying a DVD or PPV.

So that means that Hulu would have to add a lot more value features to make the service worth more than Pay-Per-View or Netflix in term of cost, convience and quaility of video

    • It makes sense. The advertising model doesn't work well anymore, since no one pays attention to them. They'll probably charge you $10-15 a month to watch a wide variety of programming on demand. People pay more than that for cable, which has limited on demand content and 16 minutes of advertisements per hour.

    • We are already paying for much to much already like for me I pay for Comcast broadband/Dish Network TV/Netflix/Cellphone/ the occasional ITunes. Enough. We give enough to these greedy tv money bl**d suckers. I know Hulu is probably getting pressured to charge from those tv studio never get enough idi*ts. What get's me is they have been giving it to us free & then we are forced to watch there suckage advertisements & now we need to charge you, yea skype tryed the same thing by giving us free calls to any phone anywhere in the USA for free for one year & then they said now we want money & look at them they are still hanging on with the thanks of Oprah using Skype on her show & other shows, but they tend to use mostly the free versions like computer to computer but for how long? We are already getting ripped off especially us in california, now another bill to pay(yum yum just what we all have been waiting for more money to pay out in a recession time, Real smart Hulu). Good luck after you go out of business. I simply do not care because there are so many other sites that it really makes no difference what these idi*ts want. Netflix is worth the money is Hulu? & I say no, most of the time these idi*ts can't get a single whole season, most of the crap on there site is dog on little clips which I then adjust the filter for just full episodes & whats left only two full episode shows & why because these studio Big Biz tv idi*ts want more & more because they don't have enough planes & boats & 100 room castles, oh no these greedy (you know whats) must have more, look I pay enough for all the crap that I pay for now, well all I can say when Hulu goes to pay I & others will be going away because we have other sites & the best at it (NETFLIX) Yea Baby. Oh well T*RRENTTTTTTTT & ENCRYTED VPN TUNNEL sound real nice right about now (ha ha).

    • Pay for HULU. When they put more ads towards the end of the movie. R.I.P., so how about just rest.......... The product warrants letting it die rather than consider taking(or trying to) funds for this site. There are others that are far better and have no ads either.

    • though you had to see this coming, I don't think hulu has reached that point yet, where many/any of us would participate in a pay to play model. I can't see paying for hulu, as it exists today

    • Hulu is/was appreciated by fans all over the world for basically one reason: Hulu takes all of the FREE TV SHOWS that the NETWORKS post on their OWN WEBSITE and keep it one tidy little site. Now, you can't watch your HBO shows or your Showtime movies, because that's just crazy talk, but you can get basic free cable for free online. Which you pay for.
Because the internet isn't free. And once you have the internet, you can watch ANY BASIC TELEVISION NETWORK SHOW FOR FREE - AND LEGALLY. Because, let this be said.. THE NETWORKS PUT THEIR SHOWS UP FOR FREE. Jesus H. Christ. So.. why in God's name would we ever pay for this?

This is only the beginning. There will be no free internet. The days of the Wild Wild West are over.

But the internet is crack. We'll all come back with our tails between our legs.

MrTangent you are right... they understood, and they could have had something unique that they could have used to their advantage as long as they kept it free. But greed gets everybody, especially americans so this was to be expected.

    • B..b...but HOW DARE Hulu charge for their services? WHY can they not see that they should CONTINUE to do what they do FOR FREE because that's WHAT WE WANT!!!!! HOW DARE THEY think they should be paid for their services???? It's not faaaiiirrr, I tell you!!

But wait! I think I'll just start MY OWN HULU, and gather lots of other workers to put together a site just like Hulu's, and I know my friends will all agree to come to work EVERY DAY FOR NO PAY, just because they LIKE to.

What do you think the commercials were for? It wasn't working everyday for no pay, it was working to get ads from the sponsors every

That was price people were willing to payfor the service was putting up with watching a minimum amount of ads..

It wasn't for free, it was the cost of the service, but if I wanted to have a subscription then I might as well use Netflix

their going to make it free again after this, or else their company will die.

    • Yeah. I actually didn't mind the 30-60 second commercials. It was a time saver and sure as heck beats 5 minutes of commercials.

I guess i'm going to have to go to torrent and websites with shady advertisements.

    • Looks like I'll be using fancast. One of the things I like about hulu is the GUI and their system didn't seem as buggy as fancast. If fancast can solve those problems they will fill the void nicely. Then they will get tires of their new found profit and decide they need more money and the process will repeate itself.

    • I will stop watching when they begin to charge--also, I still need to dig into this a little more, but there is net neutrality--but, since many news papers are failing, corporations are talking about how to start charging us for information on the Internet. So, I'm sure that will be coming around the corner as well.

You used to get it. Now you don't. This will just drive more people to torrents. It will also eventually be your undoing.

    • GREAT!!!!

This really sucks...who in there right mind wants to waste more money on shows that just suck (Besides all of those shows shown on local Tv - FOR FREE!!!!). This is a load of crap that I have to hear from them? Okay, so what's the point of putting these commercials on your site after we pay this little fee...or whatever the cost is to watch something?

Besides...we are bombarded by advertisements every f*king day in the american media. Besides...how come local tv is free? umm...ads support those stations!

No not free but at least it was less commercials than broadcast TV and had the advantage of being on demand when it was convient for you.

But that is not enough to pay for unless they add a lot more stuff to be worth it.

There are other places that have the same shows and no commercials to switch to like http://www.ch131.com/ so Hulu isn't the only game in town.

    • I don't get these people. Its just like cable, they want to charge you out the nose and then fill everything with commercials. You already paid your money, so why do you need commercials too? It just proves how out of touch these people are. I have been growing more and more tired of web content because they keep inserting more commercials, so I am with everyone else, I will find some other way to download it, even if it is two or three days after its original air date.

    • Fuck that

My love for hulu came from the fact i DIDN'T have to pay, and that i had no need to watch TV.

I could stand the adds for the shows.

I cant stand paying for something that has been free and i have been part of since the beginning.

But the thing is that in order to get enough people to watch for them to "get your head meat to a bubbly brainy fondue" they had to make it attractive.

The aliens are going to lose a lot of supply by charging and turning people away so that defeat their purpose since even though people are fascinated by what Eliza Dushku does with her tongue it's not enough to pay for.
