Introducing the mishmash

CGrantham
You’ve heard of mashups, clips of seemingly unrelated video that once mashed together makes some level of sense. Now let me introduce you to the “mishmash™.”

The mishmash™ was born out of necessity as a way for me to explain messy video edits like today’s video edited from the hour long Morning Browser (a monster mishmash™, if you will). I could call it “a complete mess,” but that isn’t cool enough for me and it’s already been trademarked by mainstream media.

The dictionary says a mishmash is “a collection or mixture of unrelated things; a hodgepodge or motley assortment of things.” Webster’s can go ahead and add a new definition for mishmash™ to its 2010 list of edits.

The mishmash™ is a video that was edited in about 10 or 15 minutes before a person has to take a shower and run off to their day job. It’s often an attempt to make a mashup but very often fails, resulting in a string of bad edited clips that often have nothing to do with one another.

A mishmash™ might hint at the editor’s intended message with the short video, but very often it does not. Mishmashes demonstrate the editor had very little time or editing skills.

Giving these type videos only one gold star rating is acceptable only if they are passed off as a mashup with some purpose or meaning. But when called a mishmash™, these videos deserve 5 gold stars and worthy praise, if not a comment or two asking for more information.
