It's been a mainstay of sex ed for more than a decade. Now, as the Obama administration cuts off federal funding, the movement scrambles for money, determined to continue its mission.

    • sex ed at my high school sucked. they taught us abstinence and about condoms and nothing else. sex ed in college has been a shock. none of us knew how to put on a condom the right way. no wonder so many of us got pregnant by junior year. not me, but too many.

    • Good. Abstinence does not work in practice. It just sounds really great to some people. It is unfortunately not something that can really be taught. I think people know they have the choice to have sex or not and that choice is extremely personal. It is also not the healthiest choice for everyone.

If the Abstinence movement wanted to make real inroads for their cause they would work to have solid, believable, abstinent role models for teems/young adults. I really do not see alot of them in the media.

    • I remember sex ed in middle school and we were taught about abstinence and contraceptives. I think that's not only the best compromise, but the best way to get the most information out there.

    • ""The programs that have by far the strongest evidence that they have a positive impact … are those that give the message that not having sex is safest, but if you have sex always use condom and contraception," says Kirby." - exactly what i'm doing with my future kids. :)

"This summer, the North Carolina Legislature approved a hybrid model, where students are taught that abstinence until marriage is the only surefire way to prevent pregnancy and STDs, but are also given information on contraceptives; parents can choose to opt out of either segment." - this actually doesn't sound too bad to me; a good compromise for all. i remember being taught both about abstinence and contraceptives when i went to school... and this gives parents the options about what their children are taught in school as far as sex education goes. i, personally, would rather all young adults learn ALL the options.
