I understand that its negative connotation in Japan as an obessive shuttin and devotee might seem like a cult but the American version is simply a way of easily identifying oneself as a japanophile, perhaps not even as an obsessive person at all rather just someone who has a shared enjoyment though there are certainly those types. If I had to choose I'd be the leave your own mark on the world Otaku. My group has 103 members, and I host regular screenings. I didn't do that overnight I wanted to make an impact.
