Jack Herer is alert and communicating with family and friends. Here, he is recovering from oral thrush, and his mouth is dry and irritated.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - For over 30 years, Jack Herer has been the inexhaustible guru of the hemp movement. Many people have expressed their deep concern for Jack's well-being since his heart attack in mid-September, at an Oregon hemp festival.
Sunday night, Jack Herer was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Eugene from the rehabilitation center where he has been receiving care. His breathing became more distressed throughout the afternoon, and finally he was rushed to the Emergency Room.
He was diagnosed with bronchitis, and given antibiotics to overcome the illness. Such prevention may not have been possible just a few days ago, when a "Do Not Transport" order was in effect. Because of a recent change in Jack's care, they were able to get him appropriate treatment, which could literally have saved his life.
More good news, Jack has been responding well to Speech, Physical and Occupational therapy treatments administered at the care center where he's residing in Eugene, Oregon. He is coherent. His speech is beginning to come back. He has no IV's, no breathing tube, and though he has a feeding tube, they expect to remove it as soon as this week.
The bad news, is the breakdown within the ranks of Jack's supporters. While Jack works to heal and rehabiitate, the world outside his room is swirling with controversy.

ok ok ok ok ok...
dkl165 is right in some ways and in others he/she is wrong.
first off no one ever said cannabis is perfect. we all know the bad effects as well as we know the good effects...
what we in the pro legalization movement are talking about is that the positives greatly outweigh the negatives.
now i do realize that there is no way that either of us are going to convince each other to change our minds on the subject, but one thing you cannot deny is facts. and for this i dont even need resources because we all know these facts.
thousands prosecuted and incarcerated simply for possession of less that one ounce of marijuana. taxpayers pay for law enforcement to actually arrest the person, the judge to rule the person guilty, and to house the non-violent offender with murderers and rapists(which also adds to prison overcrowding).
drug cartels as well as drug dealers are getting stronger and stronger by the money generated from the highest earning crop in their production,CANNABIS, helping them to buy guns and produce more crop.
billions of dollars are wastefully being spent on marijuana prohibition, while those billions of dollars could be saved for something more important, like i dont know how about our freaking trillion dollar deficit.
billions of dollars could be generated in revenue from cannabis by the govt. legalizing, taxing and selling it. way more than that could be generated through hemp goods... for that matter even more could be generated in exportation of hemp goods.
millions of jobs would be created for farming and fabricating hemp across the US not to mention the dispensaries to sell cannabis.
oh and if you want to talk about health, no matter how much research you do nothing you say can refute this... since around 1000bc. when Indians first used marijuana till now there has not been a single death due to the use of cannabis. if you want to talk about harmful chemicals... i believe there is something called a VAPORIZER, and if you didnt know what it does it heats the cannabis to just below the temp for combustion at which time the cannabis starts to, well, vaporize. all you inhale is pure THC vapors along with a couple of its other necessary properties, filtering out all the harmful carcinogens.
millions of cases not only suggest but some prove that cannabis is very helpful with most ailments and illnesses....
now im not done talkin about the positives but you just try and weigh what i just talked about to the negatives and you'll see that prohibition is ludicrous. just like alcohol prohibition. but cannabis is no where near as dangerous as alcohol.

We can solve this as I have advocated millions of times before. Instead of jail time, we start handing out fines like speeding tickets. Decriminalization, not legalization. Then it becomes lucrative and our jails our cleared out. Problem solved.

@dkl problem still not solved with decrim. The only way to get dealers to card their patrons is to legalize and regulate. With decrim it will still be easier for kids to get than alcohol. Also, decrim wont ensure consumer saftey, must regulate to keep adulterants out. Needs to be entirely above ground.
Controlled substance is an ironic misnomer. The current approach is the abdication of control.

It is good for you, it prevents cancer and neuro degenerative disease. The bad effects come from smoking. Some people are allergic, and some find its effects unpleasant, and if that is the case then it is not for you. I don't like the effects of alcohol, but I dont go around criticizing drinkers, I just don't drink.
There is a negative condition that can result with extremely heavy use called canabinoid hyperemisis, which can occur after 3 years of injesting 10 joints a day. Basically it affects your digestive system and lowers you stomach temperature, resulting in severe cramps and the only thing that helps is a warm bath. This condition goes away when you stop using so much, but you dont have to quit altogether, just do 1 or 2 a day.

DK you must be totally high on something. How was I supposed to know about any article you sent to keithponder? You say you want civil discourse, then why the fuck do you come onto a thread that is about a health update on Jack Herer and make horrible statements that sound very much like you are dancing around saying "he got what he deserved"?
You can't just do that and expect to be treated with respect. If you truly are here to educate people about the harm of cannabis then why don't you start your own story about it and invite people to comment? (rhetorical question) You didn't because clearly your intention was to be insulting and to create an angry reaction so then you could cry foul and claim your rights are being tread upon.
Well here this loud and clear, we have a right to pollute our bodies if we so choose. Who the fuck are you to come here and directly attack people with your fucking asshole opinions?

Well at least you are admitting to polluting your body when most others do not. It's funny how you ask me if I'm high or something in a negative manner, when it is the very thing you promote. In medicine circles, they would say you are diseased in the head to cause your own self destruction.

DK, HELLO, that was sarcasm about polluting. I don't for one second see consuming cannabis as polluting one's own body. I see it as a sacred right of liberty. You are so dense.
Also, my reference to you being "high on something" was meant negative comic irony or satire in the sense of suggesting that perhaps you might be "whacked on crack" or something worse, basically hyperbole. Its how people talk over here on the west coast sometimes; using extreme hyperbole to mirror the ridiculous of something you heard someone say to you.

dk- where are the "tons of proof"? I can link you University studies that refute your claim, but I'd love to see your evidence first! Well, maybe I'll give you a little taste:
"The active ingredient in marijuana cuts tumor growth in common lung cancer in half and significantly reduces the ability of the cancer to spread, say researchers at Harvard University who tested the chemical in both lab and mouse studies." ( http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070417...
"Marijuana, unlike tobacco and alcohol, does not appear to cause head, neck, or lung cancer, says a researcher from Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore.
"Daily marijuana use for a month or more was not associated with increased risk, nor was age at first use, depth of inhalation, or use of a pipe."
( http://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/news/20000508/marijuana-unlikely-to-cause...)When you have some proof that can stand against Harvard and John Hopkins, let us know. Otherwise, consider yourself pwned by the majority of people on this thread.

My main issue with you is that you immediately resort to personal attacks, making outrageous claims about anyone who disagrees with you. All I did was ask you for the "tons of evidence" you claimed to have, but instead of engaging in civil discourse, you choose the road of ridiculousness. (Also, when did I swear at you?)

Secondly, there is a common misconception amongst the American public that just because something is from Harvard, it is therefore obviously golden. Das ist falsch meine frau, and I'll tell you why:
A large proportion of the Harvard population is comprised of what you would call proto-havardiens (something like 70%), meaning that their parents went to Harvard, and around 30% is composed of neo-harvardiens, meaning that their family is Harvard virgins. If you have a parent that went to Harvard, the selection committee will pick you over a neo-harvardien 9 times out of 10, regardless of grades and SAT scores. It is called the Harvard myth. They want to protect their endowment fund, so they always allow the kiddies in.
So now you have a large population of over spoiled children who have never had to work a day in their life and have nothing better to do but get wasted and high every weekend. They are not likely to take their thesis paper seriously, so they write some garbage of how pot is not good for you.
Thirdly, that was part of my jest on some random source that my article was from. You got your source from WebMD, not the Harvard School of medicine journal. It just mentions Harvard in it. Any dork could have wrote that. Your source is equally questionable.

"Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself; and where they are, they should be changed. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against possession of marihuana in private for personal use... Therefore, I support legislation amending Federal law to eliminate all Federal criminal penalties for the possession of up to one ounce of marihuana." - Jimmy Carter, U.S. President
"I inhaled frequently. That was the point." - Barack Obama, U.S. President
"The war on drugs has been an utter failure. We need to rethink and decriminalize our nation's marijuana laws." -Barack Obama, January 2004
"The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world." - Carl Sagan, renown scientist, astronomer, astrochemist, author and TV host
"Why use up the forests which were centuries in the making and the mines which required ages to lay down, if we can get the equivalent of forest and mineral products in the annual growth of the hemp fields?" - Henry Ford, whose first Model-T was constructed from hemp fibers and built to run on hemp gasoline
"Prohibition... goes beyond the bound of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded" -Abraham Lincoln
"The prestige of government has undoubtedly been lowered considerably by the prohibition law. For nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and the law of the land than passing laws which cannot be enforced. It is an open secret that the dangerous increase of crime in this country is closely connected with this." - Albert Einstein quote on Hemp

Are you Jack's doctor? Got inside knowledge about the intimacies of Jack's health? No? Then I say you're just using an old man's misfortunes to push your ignorant agenda. Sad. Pot is safer than alcohol, cigarettes, aspirin, etc. It might not be the healthiest thing in the world, but you have no knowledge as to what Jack's other health problems are. You are simply taking an easy shot at a decent man when he's down in order to show everyone here the extent of your ignorance on this subject. There is no scientific evidence that pot use causes persisting hypertension or heart disease. It increases your pulse rate for about an hour. Exercise does the same thing. This is not normally a problem, except for people with pre-existing heart problems, which Jack has. Your insinuation that cannabis the cause of all of Jack's ills is simply unfounded, it's not based in fact, so basically you are kicking a sick man when he's down just to kick him. You're toking on propaganda, which is far more dangerous than toking on a plant. Ignorance is the root of most of the problems facing humanity, and you're doing your part to contribute to that.

The ignorance is not in me spreading what everybody already knows about the atrocities done to the body when smoking marijuana, the true ignorance is promoting the idea that it is harmless and does nothing. Thanks for the update. It is greatly appreciated. I hope Jack's supporters start working harder. I feel 'change' in the air. I 'hope' people are finally going to participate in the discussion. Jack supplied the facts, all we have to do is use them. If we can keep the conversation moving, facts really do matter. People are learning the historical facts, which were removed from our history books.
Four of my favorites are from Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and John Adams. I share them whenever I can.
"Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica." - Abraham Lincoln (from a letter written by Lincoln during his presidency to the head of the Hohner Harmonica Company in Germany)
"Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country."
- Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President"Make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed and sow it everywhere."
- George Washington, U.S. President"We shall, by and by, want a world of hemp more for our own consumption."
