sherlock homes was designed in part on supreme court justice oliver wendell holms jr. who had a singular investigative mind. the stories of his intellectual prowess and brilliant deduction are legend. he would gleen the truth from what was there and ignore what wasn't. once while traveling by train a young companion tried to strike up small talk and said " my look at those sheep, they certainly are white " to which holmes replied " yes, at least on this side". the stories of sherlock holmes and justice holmes are worth your attention and will enrich your mind.
there are mistakes in some details of sherlock holmes stories, that is because they were written in installments for a london paper and were not expected to be very popular and certainly not microscopically scrutinized by obsessed fans world wide. a fan base like what happened to star trek developed and the author, sir doyle was overwhelmed by questions about this detail and that. drove him bonkers.
the first story is a novel about a mormon murder in england, holmes plays a small role as the detailed story is of the mormons; from their cross country exodus to the development of clans and family vendettas and finally the sanction of a rival clan member. the story is generational, covering many decades and is mostly historically accurate. - 3 months ago

to Ken1138: if you had actually read any of the Sherlock Holmes short stories and novels by Sir Arthur Doyle, then you would be aware that Holmes did do all of the fighting and action stuff, it was just only ever alluded to, never written about. it's obvious that the director is taking the allusions from the original stories and actually showing the audience what Holmes was talking about when he made is obscure references to past events. in regards to Watson, he was a retired army officer who always had his gun with him, so it is not a far stretch to see him as a more note-worth person. i do not think in anyway he is being depicted as a "brawling thug". i really think that you should do more research before you make accusations about a movie that hasn't even been released yet.

You're absolutely off your rocker. I've read the entire canon 6-7 times and individual stories hundreds of times. Holmes knew Baritsu, used it against at The Falls, and occasionally escaped from situations that he later related to Watson. But so much more of this movie is not congruous to the themes of the original Canon. My details here: http://www.popbunker.net/2009/10/a-study-in-dread-sherlock-holmes-2009/
Conan Doyle was infatuated with "winning" without fighting. He was mesmerized by his mentor, Dr. Joseph Bell and Poe's Auguste Dupin. The idea was to craft a force against evil that battled thuggery, blackmail, and schemes with his wits while turning the plans of the evildoer upside down without resorting to violence. To quote Holmes:
"Violence does, in truth, recoil upon the violent, and the schemer falls into the pit which he digs for another."
Holmes would only resort to violence to thwart a scheme as a last result. The Fight Club-like sporting scenes are completely against character.
And I dare you to say I need to do research. If you want to goes Holmes to Holmes, I'm down any time.

Doesn't matter what anyone thinks, fictional characters are going to be constantly 'reinvented' according to the times. That's just the nature of the game. With movies like 'Transformers 2' and 'G.I. Joe' going gangbusters at the box office you would have to expect a radical interpretation of Holmes, with alot of action instead of cerebral detective work. Whether it will work or not is something that the movie goer will ultimately decide.

Looks terrible! :) Sherlock Holmes was not an action hero, he was a cerebral detective whose intellect put him five moves ahead of having to dodge bullets or jump for his life. Watson was not a brawling thug, he was a thoughtful, sensitive physician, and he was Holmes' conscience. I love Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as actors...but this is just another sad example of the erosion of our culture. Classical movies and great works of literature are being mined by sophomoric producers for quick cash, and the new generations now come to know these great mythologies as nothing more than trashy, glitzy cgi-schlock. If video killed the radio star then CGI killed movies.

When posting, if you cut out the second link at the beginning of the article current seems to reassign the first link to itself. Weird, but true.
