Cause when they get home they STUFF THEIR FACES & LIE TO THEMSELVES & to The Journal : 58 Fat People loss only 7 pounds they are all COUCH POTATOS &
BURGER KING FANS ! Thats the only way to lose so less ! -
Perhaps because muscle weighs more than fat.
-
Interesting, the 'disappointing results' go on to say that there are other health benefits to exercise and that emphasis on weight loss should be reduced.
-
It's simple calorie math.
If a person takes in 3000 calories and expends only 500 calories doing whatever exercise they do, then they are running a deficit.
That person gets fat and out of shape.
Just like government.-

Aerobic exercise doesn't really burn that many calories. If anything, you'd want to do it for the metabolism boost, but I wouldn't expect real significant weight loss. People just need to learn to balance their meals and take care of their bodies.

Something is screwy with these results. I'd like to see how this test was set up and the assumptions made by the researchers. One thing that hit me as odd is that they studied obese individuals;so I have to question how rigorous a workout they had them do. I was a runner for years and never gained a pound, but when I stopped because of bad hips, I gained weight. Does this imply that there is a certain level of exercise that must be done before a significant amount of weight will occur. On the other side of the equation I ride a bike now and it's not uncommon for me to do 20 miles three or four times a week and can't lose any more than 5 or 6 pounds in a season.

As a former NCAA Track and Field All American & retired professional athlete, I don't find a shred of truth in this story. We all know that muscle weighs more than fat and diet plays a large part in weight loss, but exercise is paramount.
This story is bogus as all outdoors, and that's the only reason as to why it is on the front page.
Inquiry minds want to know and some people will do anything for attention.

lift weights, lift weights, drink some whey protein and then lift some more weights. Aerobic exercise is nice a few times a week at most just to keep your heart healthy, but it tends to make people hungry more than anything else. When you lift weights you increase lean muscle mass and that lean muscle gobbles up all the calories you could ever dream of eating. If you are a woman and are worried that "lifting weights" will make you bulky, think again, it would take an unspeakably long time for that to happen and you could prevent it long before it ever happened. In the meantime you'd have a very attractive physique. People! Lift weights, you will burn fat and get thinner, I promise. I should know, I struggled with 20-40lbs overweight for years and finally got it figured out when I traded in 5mile runs for 35lb curls.

The New York Times must be running out of intelligent writers and things to write about. It's a great idea to compare a human body to that of a rat. I'm sure there's alot of validity there.
"In other work by Melanson’s group, published in September, laboratory rats that had been overfed and then slimmed through calorie reduction were able to “defend” their lower weight more effectively if they ran on a treadmill and ate at will than if they had no access to a treadmill.
This is crazy. I would would call a slow new day. There trying to create hype of attention. Really? A rat?
Everybody's body is different and responds to exercise different. There is no one set way to do things. No golden rule. That would make working out much easier but that's just not the way it works.

I believe that it is always necessary to combine diet and exercise. Where it says the population didn't change their diet, they might have consumed more than normal.

Adjusting your diet will cause more weight loss than actual excerise.

I disagree. You dont lose weight because you lose fat, gain muscle. Exercise made these people feel better after 12 weeks. They probably slept better and had better skin. Less stress and are reving up their metabolism for future fat loss.
-
If you just start an exercising regiment you will begin to gain muscle under the fat. Muscle weighs more and is harder to get rid of than fat so naturally it will seem like you are gaining or losing no weight, when in fact you're losing fat but gaining muscle.

------People “are only burning 200 or 300 calories” in a typical 30-minute exercise session, Melanson points out. “You replace that with one bottle of Gatorade."-------

Isn't this common knowledge by now?
I mean, all throughout school, all I've ever heard was, to be healthy you have to exercise AND eat healthy.

"The group lost an average of a little more than seven pounds, and many lost barely half that."
So let me get this straight they LOST WEIGHT and the study concluded you can't lose weight working out??????????????????
It also says they didn't change their diet, last time I checked EVERY SINGLE SOURCE says when you want to lose weight eat right and exercise. Eat right and exercise, eat right and exercise. EAT RIGHT and exercise.
See that first part I'll say it again: "EAT RIGHT and exercise." So you see, you're a moron. Whoever made this study.

Eat less and you lose wieht. It's pretty simple. Look at anerexics or famine victims. That's extreme but you can whinge about bad genes, big bones, and slow metabolisims all you like but it's all a lie because somepeople just can't stop eating.

You have to go on a DIET. I've lost 60 pounds and guess what I did? Exercise AND diet. You cant expect to loose weight if you don't change your diet. Coming from a former fatass, the most important role in loosing weight is eating healthier and in smaller portions. 5 small meals a day will boost your metabolism and increase weight loss. You cant eat a big mac with large fries and a coke, and do an hour or so of aerobics/cardio and expect to loose weight, you're just wasting your time. Exercise is essential too weight loss but, not on its own. It's when you combine exercise AND proper diet that one sees results.
-
pretty simple. exercising builds muscle weight. losing weight isn't what you always necessarily want. lose flab. replace it with muscle.

That's a complete lie. Mostly it depends on the individuals diet. You can exercise all you want but if you eat crap, it annuls at that work you did, and a lot of Americans don't realize you have to change the way you eat too with exercise - apparently.
Look at the show "The Biggest Loser"! How can you say exercise doesn't make you lose weight. Retarded lie! I lost weight when I exercised and changed my diet for life.
Just don't eat cheap junk food and crap. And also taste your food when you eat. Fat people put food in them for the sake of putting it in them; they don't taste it.
-
I can't believe this shit is still in the news, on TV, in magazines, blah blah fucking blah. This isn't hard people: exercise daily, don't eat more than you burn unless you're trying to build muscle, take adequate vitamins and mineral supplements if you must, get plenty of vegetables and fruits, and drink lots of water.
I hate stupid people, but one thing worse than stupid people is fat stupid people.
-
Well I was under the assumption what that you had to change your diet and excercise. Keeping on with the habits that got you overweight is the problem.
