    Image...

I was only 4 years of age when the Wall came down, but my hometown's library has a section of the Wall and I must say that it's hauntingly eery to see in person this symbol of oppression. Nowadays the powerful oppress implicitly :-/

Though I was a six year old kid, and didn't fully understand what was going on, images of this happening were seared into my mind.

In school the teachers tried to explain what was going on, and as a result, I developed an ongoing inability to keep the differences between Germany and Russia straight. Was Karl Marx Russian or German? Stalin? Why were the Russians in Berlin? Was Berlin in Russia or Germany? Oh my confused little six year old head.

We have a section of the Berlin Wall in my hometown of Portland, ME.

I heard a while back that a men's bathroom in Las Vegas has a huge chunk of the wall! I found it a bit funny that people are now rather literally pissing on the wall! It's a bit sad that while the wall in Berlin fell, it was only one of many walls between people! There is now a wall between the US & Mexico as well as walls in other nations & then we have the walls that are not made of brick ,stone or fencing, but rather of hate! The fall of the Berlin wall represents hope! Hope that the world can become a more peaceful place! While this is a celebration, let's not forget there are still many walls that need to fall!

I was watching the 20th anniversary celebrations on France 24 on Monday, and I learnt from one of the reports that the British Prime Minister at the time, Margaret Thatcher, was against the fall, I wasn't surprised.
