US sniper execution appeal denied

The US Supreme Court has rejected an appeal for a stay of execution from lawyers for the man behind the 2002 sniper attacks in Washington DC.

John Allen Muhammad is due to be executed on Tuesday for the murder of Dean Harold Meyers, one of 10 people killed during three weeks of attacks.

The court gave no reason for the rejection of the clemency appeal.

Muhammad's then teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, is serving life in prison for his part in the attacks.

The two men killed six people in Alabama and Louisiana before moving on to Maryland, Washington and Virginia.

People speak of their fears during the 2002 sniper attacks
Mr Meyers was shot at a petrol station in Manassas, Virginia.

Muhammad will die by lethal injection at a prison in Virginia but his lawyers have criticised the court ruling.

"Virginia will execute a severely mentally ill man who also suffered from Gulf War Syndrome," the Associated Press news agency quoted lawyer Jonathan Sheldon as saying.

Mr Sheldon also criticised the timing of the execution, due the day before Veterans Day, a US public holiday honouring the military.

He does deserve to die for what he did but the state execution somehow makes us less human. It's unnatural to kill another human and the Armed forces will tell you the same thing getting people to kill one another is a tough job it goes against the human mindset. Life without parole is a social action that needs to happen. We are getting more and more desensitized to killing with two wars going on and this thing about to happen. The human condition will suffer a little more in this country.

Not much sympathy for this guy. He found a mentally vulnerable teen, emotionally dominated him, and used him to help kill people for fun.

This guy signed his own death warrant the minute he pulled the trigger. Mental or not, he knew what he was doing. How can anyone have sympathy for this kind of animal?

Seems this asshole is scared to die and just trying to save his ass. Should have thought about that before going on a "mentally ill" rampage. Too many episodes like this nowdays to let a pussy like this guy live. If he had the balls to shoot those people, then he has the balls to die without complaining about it.

I don't know how I feel about the lawyers defending him... being a lawyer must suck.

Yeah, no sympathy for this guy as far as I'm concerned.

However, I wonder what might happen if the people who lost lost loved one's had the final say so in a case like this. (where the death sentence would be an option) Like, if the families had to approve of him dying, would they and could they live with the fact they could have let him live/die?. I don't think I could personally forgive and forget something like this..but it would be interesting to see how something like that would pan out...
