Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., said Monday it's unlikely he could support a bill that doesn't clearly prohibit federal dollars from going to pay for abortions. His spokesman said Nelson is weighing options, including offering an amendment similar to the one passed by the House this weekend.
The House-passed restrictions were the price Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., had to pay to get a health care bill passed, on a narrow 220-215 vote. But it's prompted an angry backlash from liberals at the core of her party, and some are now threatening to vote against a final bill if the curbs stay in.

There are two Democratic Senators pushing for this (Ben Nelson and Bob Casey). Luckily, two Republican Senators (Susan Collins & Olympia Snowe of Maine) are strongly opposed to any anti-abortion provisions.
-
This really is terrible. It is obvious to me that anti-abortion advocates are really just anti-women. If this is going to be in the bill, then I no longer support it.
-
I am very upset with the idea of no Roe V Wade. I faught all my teenage years for women have the rite to legalize abortion. I think the repugs want women to go to allys with hagers up thim like the old days.

I don't see anything wrong with stating concisely and clearly that public provided health care not fund abortions. Take the wind out of the anti abortion derailers sails. Give them what they want. Don't let them side track the real issue which is that we need the public option and the exchanges in order to achieve social justice with health care.
-
I understand that abortion should be safe and legal. Its a no brainer. But if we want to have public health care, the price we have to pay is no publicly funded abortions.
Besides, the cost of most abortions are low, and there is, after all the abortion pill that is very effective. If people are too lazy to use birth control, then they should have to pay to get their own abortion.
However, I do think they need to make an exception for rape, incest, and when the pregnancy threatens the life of the mother. In these instances the public insurance option or exchanges should cover the procedure.
-
They will try to oppress all , in some way or another , but only if we remain silent !
-
This is straight bullshit. Abortions are a legal medical procedure and should be covered by abortions.
-
It is already a pain for a women to get an abortion... This is pathetic at best. American is sooo backward I sometimes feel in the middle-ages... Burn the witch !
Anti-abortion violence is violence committed against individuals and organizations that provide abortion. Incidents of violence have included destruction of property, in the form of vandalism, to crimes against people, including kidnapping, stalking, assault, attempted murder, and murder, to crimes affecting both people and property, including arson and bombings.

So the Dems failed to protect a woman's right to choose in the current bill that Pelosi got passed?

All fine for anybody to defend their opinion but isn't a woman the ultimate decider of what she can do or cannot do with her own body ?
Isn't the role of the state basically to get the fuck out of the way (or provide basic care) but not to prop up the 'Burn the witch' crowd into a frenzy ?
Separation of church & state is supposed to exist in what remains of this country....
While zillions of $ go to massacre children in foreign countries some God given authority to save the fetus somehow prevails...
Can you say... hypocrisy ?
How the Stupak Amendment Radically Undermines Abortion Rights
By Rachel Morris, Mother Jones Online. Posted November 10, 2009.Bart Stupak's last-minute amendment to the health care bill is even more dangerous than you think.

So, a woman makes a choice to have a relationship with a man. She then chooses to have sex. She gets pregnant. She then chooses to have a government funded abortion.
Choices, choices, choices.
Where is my choice in this matter? Why would I have to pay for terminating a pregnancy I did not cause?Let's encourage responsible choices.
If women want abortions, fine.
Let them choose the payment method, cash or check.
Keep your ovaries away from my check book.-

GEORGE CARLIN: Boy, these conservatives are really something, aren’t they?
They’re all in favor of the unborn.
They will do anything for the unborn.
But once you’re born, you’re on your own.
Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus, from conception to nine months. After that, they don’t want to know about you. They don’t want to hear from you. No nothing. No neo-natal care, no day care, no Head Start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing. If you’re pre-born, you’re fine. If your pre-school, your [bleep].Conservatives don’t give a [bleep] about you until you reach military age. Then they think you are just fine, just what they’ve been looking for. Conservatives want live babies so they can raise them to be dead soldiers. Pro-life. Pro-life. These people aren’t pro-life. They’re killing doctors. What kind of pro-life is that? What, they’ll do anything they can to save a fetus, but if it grows up to be a doctor, they just might have to kill it?
They’re not pro-life.
You know what they are?
They’re anti-women. Simple as it gets. Anti-women.
They don’t like them. They don’t like women.
They believe a woman’s primary role is to function as a brood mare for the state. Pro-life? You don’t see any of these white, anti-abortion women volunteering to have any black fetuses transplanted into their uteruses, do you? No. You don’t see them adopting a whole lot of crack babies, do you? No, that might be something Christ would do.And you won’t see a lot of these pro-life people dousing themselves in kerosene and lighting themselves on fire. You know, morally committed religious people in South Vietnam knew how to stage a [bleep] demonstration, didn’t they? They knew how to put on a [bleep] protest. Light yourself on fire! Come on, you moral crusaders, let’s see a little smoke.
"The three monotheisms, animated by the same genealogical death instinct, share a series of identical contempt: hatred of reason and intelligence; hatred of freedom; hatred of all books in the name the one & only; hatred of life; hatred of sexuality, of women and pleasure; hatred of feminity; hatred of the body, of desires & impulses. Instead of all that, Judaism, Christianity and Islam defend: faith and belief, obedience and submission, a taste for death and a passion for the beyond, asexual angel and chastity, virginity and monogamic fidelity, the wife and the mother, the soul and spirit. In other words, life crucified and celebrated nothingness" – Michel Onfray

not passing the bill because of abortion is exactly what they want us to do and health care is far too important. i say pass the bill and work on adding abortion to it later. in the mean time its not really affecting abortion accessibility that much.
-
I am saddened that this is happening last minute, and I am also sad about how callously some of the comments say, " It's not my fucking problem you got pregnant. You were careless." or " We should make an exception for rape and incest." I myself got pregnant while using protection, and you can't tell me I should only be allowed a painful operation only after I have been sexually assalted and hopefully not infected with a sexually transmitted disease.
What I would like to ask is why does it matter? I would be willing to give my tax dollars for men to get a vasectomy, why not abortion? I would be willing to give my tax dollars for someone who gets in motorcycle accident with no helmet, if we are using the logic of " It's their own fault." Don't pull that one out unlesss you are the picture of moral perfection.
The issue is healthcare, and that involves many procedures that we don't agree with , helping people we probably don't even like, but that is the point. To take one out is to runin the whole Idea of the new healthcare bill.

what scares me is that if they take away Roe V Wade women are going to a back alley and get it done the dangerous way like we had during the 50's.

According to this article, only 13% of abortions were covered by private insurance last year... So what's the harm in excluding abortions from federal coverage? I understand that it does set a precedent that may start a change trend, but that will need to be addressed as a separate issue. Right now we're trying to get a bill passed. Some battles need to be forfeit to win this war.
-
I don't get why so many of you are panicking and acting like this suddenly overturned Roe v. Wade... Relax, it's not happening yet. Some of you are correct in stating that this sets a precedent for private insurers to deny coverage, but it's still not making abortions illegal.
-
The Stupak-Pitt amendment goes too far.
-
Kill the bill, everyone had to stick their dick in it and its ruined.
-
We could avoid this mess just by reading the bills before they are voted on. What a simple concept.
