American Medical Association rethinking pot prohibition?

Image...
The American Medical Association on Tuesday issued a cautious but historically significant call to change America's marijuana prohibition laws, urging a "review" of the drug's status as a Schedule I drug.

At a meeting in Houston, the AMA's House of Delegates adopted a new policy that calls for "marijuana's status as a federal Schedule I controlled substance be reviewed with the goal of facilitating the conduct of clinical research and development of cannabinoid-based medicines, and alternate delivery methods."

That does not mean the AMA supports the legalization or decriminalization of marijuana.

Schedule I drugs are those considered to have no medical benefit and to be harmful when used under any circumstances. As such, marijuana is currently grouped by the federal government with drugs like heroin and LSD. By comparison, cocaine and methamphetamines are classified as Schedule II drugs, which may have some clinical benefits when used in the proper circumstances. The AMA's stance could simply result in the rescheduling of marijuana as a controlled substance that has some medical benefit.

However, Aaron Houston, director of government relations for the Marijuana Policy Project, calls the move "historic" all the same, noting that it comes from "what has historically been America's most cautious and conservative major medical organization."

Marijuana = Heroin? No benefit? Time to get back to reality people. Let's drop the old superstitions and enter an age of reason.

marijuana is the most cultivated plant on the planet. The fight to keep this illegal has run its course.
the fact that this drug has treated medical conditions for the last 3000 years even up through the 1920's in America it was sold on shelves in stores as a Rheumatism pain killer.

They see all the money to be made and they want in on it. But they still don't want to permit you or me to smoke it casually.

We will have our marijuana regardless of these outdated laws...it would be just if we weren't considered criminals, so please decriminalize.

same old shit... big Pharma wants to make money off of it.
it's no question that they are backing the it's legalization.. . it's the motives they have for them that are questionable.

    For shame.

we should look to legalize marijuana cultivation for personal use. the reality is that a good majority of the people in this country (whether they admit it or not, or call themselves "occasional" smokers") use marijuana.. .legalizing it to make money off of something so natural is wrong.

trying to identify chemicals to create more drugs to put us on is NOT the solution.

We can medicate ourselves quite naturally just baking it or smoking it. No thanks for the pill Big Pharma.. .you can keep those and your drugs.

I think the AMAs motives are a little bit questionable but this is an important step in the right direction. It seems like the momentum shift on this issue is starting to become very apparent.

Marijuana has proven medicinal attributes that have been shown to help people in chronic pain, glaucoma sufferers, and those who suffer nausea from chemotherapy (to name a few). Its side effects do not approach the severity of side effects caused by prescription drugs such as Ambien, Prozac, and Vicodin. It is time for elected representatives to say "No" to big pharmaceutical manufacturers (and their lobbyists) and enact sensible regulations for the legal use of medicinal marijuana.

One step for mankind, one giant leap for marijuana rights!
It's about time our health advocates stepped up to support this plant's benefits.

With the internet, we could have a real democracy. One person, one vote. Everybody participates. Just need an amendment that allows national internet voting to trump Congress.

They wouldn't cheat - would they?

we all know that pot can be benefitial! but the government are just a little scard that we'll stop using their drugs! you know what i'm talking bout! and if you dont then here its; "Prescription drugs"!!!! you know what i'm talking bout, lides, hilbilly heroin, vitamin R! the list goes on and on. in fact A 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health showed that among all youths aged 12 to 17, 6% had tried prescription drugs for recreational use in the last month. oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), and meperidine (Demerol) are some of the most commonly abused prescription drugs in the USA at the moment. the fact that In seven cities in 2000 including Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Seattle, and Washington DC, 626 people died from overdose of painkillers and tranquilizers. and by 2001, such deaths had increased in Miami and Chicago by 20 percent. so what about we give marijuana atry for all the right reasons and start cracking down on prescription drug abuse because at the moment it is the second most abused drug amoung teens and young people. rather ironically the first place winner was Marijuana!!! haahaha

Seriously, the money that would come in from taxing it like alcohol or tobacco would wipe out or put a serious dent in our deficit. Just legalize it already! I don't even smoke, but I can see that the benefits outweigh the negatives in this situation.

President Obama could right the wrongs of Richard Nixon with the stroke of a pen. He could reclassify cannabis hemp and let the healing begin.

For too long, politicians have used the 'war on cannabis' on American soil for political gain. Ignoring facts to perpetuate a war for political gain is just wrong. It really is time for change.

Those of us who have been screaming for change, see the tide is turning. More and more people are challenging the 'thought' behind the actions, which brought us to a war on American soil? Were they using facts, which justified their actions, leading us to become a country, which leads the world in 'prison population'? Mothers, fathers, sons and daughters have been thrown into prison due to a 'war' based on 'madness'. It's time to end the madness.

There are too many facts available, which can no longer be denied, or ignored. If those who know the 'war on canncabis' is wrong, would speak out, we could start a tidal wave in the 'right' direction and end this unjust war.

After I read the book "The Emperor Wears No Clothes", I was sure things would change. Boy was I wrong. My sons were in high school. And now my granddaughters are in middle school. It's been a long, long time.

With the help of current.com the tide is changing. People are learning and sharing cannabis information. When people find out the facts, they can no longer be spun with disinformation. It's time to stop the spin. It's an "Assault on Reason".
