RICHMOND, Va. - John Allen Muhammad was executed Tuesday night for the sniper attacks in 2002 that left 10 dead and spread such fear people were afraid to go shopping, cut grass or pump gas.The three-week killing spree in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., was carried out with a teenage accomplice who is serving life in prison without parole. Muhammad, 48, died by injection at 9:11 p.m. EST after he exhausted his court appeals and Gov. Tim Kaine denied clemency.
Muhammad's attorneys earlier had asked Kaine to commute his sentence to life in prison because they said he was severely mentally ill

Bring back the colosseum! Forget using numerous tax dollars on lethal injection, let our criminals fight each other to the death. And charge for it! This would help with the national deficit and lower the costs of running prisons. People would watch that shit.

Although he does deserve it, it's not right. We should've just let him rot in prison til he died of old age. This is a 14 year old speaking, but I KNOW that I have done MUCH more research and I know a LOT more about the death penalty, and how people are killed than the average person for the death penalty. You sit in a chair, unable to move, as your skin burns and you have cardiac arrest for about 40 minutes. It's not justice. It's torturing a man to death, AKA being a pussy.

I did research on capital punishment for a story and from what I found, sodium penthothal puts the prisoner to sleep beforehand. Do you mean the previous forms, which left the prisoner conscious before electrocution? I'm honestly curious which form you're referencing.

He got convicted, because killing is wrong. So, in turn, we kill him?! Perfect sense.
I mean,... all the victims have been resurrected, this guy's psychological problems are now fixed and the world is safer due to his execution.
At one moment,... ONE person thinks taking a life is acceptable. At another moment,... a large number of people think taking a life is acceptable.
We let personal feelings, sympathy for victims, religious belief and/or financial reasons dictate whether a person should continue living or not?!?!?! Instead of just following the idea that taking a life is wrong?! - 3 months ago

I can't stand the idea of a death penalty. It seems so wrong to take a life, even if the person was responsible for taking many lives. The fact that families of victims are happy when the criminal dies seems wrong to me too. If they know what it's like to lose somebody, why are they putting the criminal's family through it too?
There has to be some alternative.

If you're going to live in a society, follow its basic rules. Like the one that all societies have - don't go around killing people. Society, as an entity, particularly in these harsh economic times, cannot afford to divert its bloodflow to tumors. It's like jsivla said - why should we have to pay taxes, that could have gone to something useful, in order to keep murderers alive? If my paycheck is going to be sliced apart for something, I should at least be able to put my two cents in as to how it's spent without being called a nazi.

I know I'm going to get a lot of slack for this, but hey, freedom of speech is definitely still alive.. As one person says, doing this doesn't bring the other people back, etc. But doing this is not wrong either. Even the Bible says "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth", though I don't believe in God, I believe in that saying. We have too many bleeding heart liberals in this country, and that's why we're getting run over by anyone who screams "unconstitutional or inhumane" We need to put on our "balls conlogne" and step up. I don't know about you, but it really bugs me, that I work hard for my money, and to find out my taxes are paying for some criminal to have 3 square meals a day and roof over his head, while I see people living on the street in my own town. Shame.

This was a waste. Nothing was learned. No real punishment was dealt. This did nothing to bring the people he killed back. Did nothing to ease the suffering. The thing to do was to let him rot in jail for his entire nature life. This let him off easy.

"execution - as sentenced by a judge, is not murder, far from it."
Yea its far far worse. On one side we had two fucked up people who decided to take the life of other people and on the other side we have an entire country. Two men who are fucked up crazy, insane or just jackasses i can understand but when a group of people decided to get together and can still come up with the idea of murder .. there is something wrong.

Word. I've always wondered this, too. Which seems more civilized (and peaceful); ONE person wanting and committing murder,... or DOZENS, HUNDREDS, maybe THOUSANDS of people wanting ONE person dead, and killing that person?!?!?!?! At one moment,... ONE person thinks taking a life is acceptable. At another moment,... a large number of people think taking a life is acceptable.
Personally,... I'd like BOTH versions to end. - 3 months ago

neonbunny also wrote this comment directed towards me before and then it disappeared: "No sovereign state should legally be able to kill its own citizens, no matter what terrible acts they commit." I'd believe you really felt that way if someone you loved had been murdered by a serial killer. But since that most likely not the case, your sort of coming across as an idiot."
I'd like to respond: Even if I did have a loved one murdered, this is why we do not allow the victims to choose the punishment. It is not the government's job to be vengeful. I am not being an idiot, I truly do believe that it is NOT the government's right to kill it's citizens. I don't care how evil they are or what kind of acts they have committed. Let them rot in jail for life.

True, "killing is killing" and "death is [indeed] death", however, execution - as sentenced by a judge, is not murder, far from it. & I'm not even saying this in support of capital punishment, I'm merely saying that: equating capital punishment to heinous, random acts of terror - is quite cynical.
I too live in Md (where most of the shootings took place, not DC) & also recall the fear & frustration, especially when the 13-year-old Iran Brown was shot while going to school.

Every crime has a consequence. Execution is simply that consequence. Communities have a right to dictate punishment...as long as it's not waterboarding...that would have been torture. Can't do that.
Criminals in america have it made - if they lived in say.....Iraq.....they'd be far worse off - along with their tongues, ears, eyes gouged out, hands cut off, etc....but wait, that doesn't happen anymore.
Big question, should Hasan be next? He killed 13, well, really 14 if you count the pregnant soldier's unborn son, which, btw, according to Texas law is a "human being" and a killer can be tried for that death as well.

I was 15 and away from home at a boarding school in northern VA when this happened. I remember everyone in the area and at school being terrified to go out in public b/c of the shootings. There was no real feeling of safety anywhere. Going to get gas or the mall seemed like a risk b/c there was no information on who was doing it or what their motive was. It was a horrible time to be in until he was caught.
That..and 9/11.

It is interesting that Sweden has a murder rate of 1.73 (per 100,000) and NO death penalty.
Yet we (the US) has a murder rate of 8.40 (per 100,000) and we DO have a death penalty.so while we use capital punishment and legitimize it by saying it is preventative (by scaring criminals) but other countries blatantly prove by example that our ways DO NOT work, then why do we keep doing it?
(and don't pull the whole we need money so clear out the prisons BS because killing prisoners is MUCH more expensive than people think AND we could cut or prison costs by an insane amount of money if we let our nonviolent non criminals go (small amount drug users and 3 strike law victims))

I find it amazing that however twisted, John Allen Muhammad had to get some kind of satisfaction from killing people...What was his justification? Then I wonder, could it be the same satisfaction that a lot of people receive in having John Allen Muhammad being executed? What is your justification?... and should you then, need to be executed? When does it stop?

I'm from Bethesda, MD (in Montgomery County) and was in 6th grade when the snipers were committing their crimes. It was absolutely terrifying.
That said, executing the sniper does not fix anything. He's dead. Great; we all feel better knowing he isn't alive, but executing him did not truly help anyone realistically. Killing is killing. Death is death. No sovereign state should legally be able to kill its own citizens, no matter what terrible acts they commit. And this is coming from someone who lived with the terror of the snipers.

Totally agree with you on the killing is killing. What is the difference between executing him when he executed others? I totally get what he did was wrong and have sympathy for the families that lost someone. I was in the area too. 10th grade and not allowed to leave campus until it was over. But I do not agree with the death penalty but I have also never been in a situation where it directly affected me.

To Neonbunny: It's all the same. Homicide committed by the state is still killing.
The death penalty shouldn't be decided by those who the crimes directly affect; that is even more so a form of revenge.

I disagree with the death penalty, in general, but this guy does scare me. When people do things like this, it's like all their humanity vacates the premises -- I often wonder how they feel afterward, especially if they're mentally ill and are brought back to their senses. I wonder what it would feel like to know you've taken the lives of so many and can never return them. If there's any remorse, it must be overwhelming.
Or, perhaps, that's wishful thinking. I can only speculate what happens inside other peoples' minds, but this entire experience must have been terrifying for those that lived through it and I thank Whomever's listening that they're still alive and that they can at least attempt to get on with their lives, even if it's going to be an arduous, uphill battle.
I wonder about Muhammad's family, who are going to have to live with this for the rest of their lives. There is no HONOR in this sort of travesty. There is no GREATNESS in any form of killing, even if it's justified, because it takes a piece of whomever does it with the dead forever.
