Salt Lake City passes gay-rights ordinances with Mormon backing
Tuesday's action was the first time the Utah-based church - which has been steadfast in its opposition to gay marriage - has publicly supported gay rights legislation.
"The church supports these ordinances because they are fair and reasonable and do not do violence to the institution of marriage," Michael Otterson, the director of public affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said.
The vote makes Salt Lake City the first Utah community to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

So let me get this right...
The polygamist cult that refused to recognize interracial marriages gets to lecture everyone else on what constitutes a marriage, and now that they've successfully poured money into taking away gay marriage rights, they want us all to know they're cool with the gays? Why don't I believe them? -
When Pres. Johnson signed into law the civil rights act they did the same thing so that the state would not lose federal funding. I think all religion is poison, but this one takes the cake. Flat out racist and homophobes. Gotta cut this short, my magic underwear are just coming out of the dryer.

I think more than anything, it's in responce to this:

While I understand the concept of non-discrimination, I can't help but think of reverse discrimination against the rights of those who take issue with the gay lifestyle, especially where it could be right under their noses renting homes or employing them in their private businesses.
What I mean is if I lived in a home and had the upstairs apartment for rent, by LAW, if a gay applicant wanted the apartment and I denied them, I would be punished for having a belief system? What happened to religious freedom? I think these laws are taking rights away from private citizens who wish to live out their faith.
I suppose I could say I chose someone else to rent the apartment and that would be the end of that...or would it?

Although I think it's a bit ridiculous that you have to pass a law to make it ILLEGAL to disfavor people who are simply living their lives a bit differently, I'm happy they banned discrimination against sexual orientation. Let's just hope they stick to it instead of finding a loop hole..

it is time for the gay movement to huddle in masses, and congregate in one territory to institute new laws that will make their marriages legal by law, and outlaw traditional marriages at the same time.....Until this happens,..the gay marriage movement will always be controlled by the straits.

@nobamayomoma
i mean...you could...if bigotry is your belief system of choice....
this is more about fair employment practices and not having mandates in place for keeping gays out of your precious, all straight, all christian, all white, gated community, for instance...
perhaps this picture has lost all meaning...

Sigh, I left Utah to go to a liberal arts college and I am being faced with similar problems at Green Mountain College. I filed a 42 page complaint against the ACLU of Vermont and I have overwhelming evidence to support my filing and instead of respecting my constitutional rights, I am faced with such harassment and such ignorance that I find it absolutely absurd.

I'm not impressed. The mormons are nothing more than a bunch of god fearing lunatics who seek to impose their disgusting religion into our private lives. They're trying to polish their image of bigotry, but a zebra doesn't change it's stripes.

Nicely done, Salt Lake.

Apparently some Mormons got their magical underwear in a bunch over my earlier comment, ignoring their cult's own past and my point about it relating to their feigned support for this law. Let me elaborate. The Mormon cult was explicitly polygamist for decades until they had to /publicly/ disavow it to become the state of Utah (what a convenient change of heart). The Mormon cult also banned inter-racial marriages until recently, and only after that was the law of the land. Clearly they have a terrible record on marriage, and it makes their opposition to gay marriage equality all the more hilarious. This is one group that should keep it's mouth shut on the issue, if only because the level of irony is lethal when they talk about marriage being a union between "one man and one woman." Tell that to your cult founder. Now that there are efforts underway to remove the Mormon cults tax exempt status for being a political machine, they've had another equally genuine change of heart. They're trying to assuage the anger of marriage equality activists by throwing them a bone. I'm betting they don't bite.

Well, anyone should have a right to public housing or employment in public companies (or private companies publicly traded without being discriminated against.
I take issue with private housing or privately owned companies being punished for not hiring who they want. I don't believe affirmative action applies to privately owned businesses, I mean small ma & pa businesses or non-public traded businesses so those folks should have the freedom to choose who they want working for them and/or living in their properties.
I still find it odd that what people do in bed has now become a civil right.

I'm a little annoyed that this issue is being handled on city/municipality level. There should be a federal law against discrimination, or maybe even a constitutional amendment. wait...
