McDonald’s Corp., already the world’s largest hamburger chain, will add 1,000 locations next year, the fast food chain said Thursday. During a meeting with Wall Street analysts, executives said the new locations will will be concentrated in China, Australia, Russia, Germany, France and the U.S. Specifically, McDonald’s plans for 150 new U.S. locations plus: 260 in Europe; 490 across Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Australia; 80 in Latin America; and 20 in Canada.

McDonald’s already operates 32,000 restaurants in 100 countries. Meanwhile, the restaurant chain said it planned to rehab the inside and outside of 2,300 restaurants next year, about half of which will be in Europe. The dual efforts, along with other construction plans, will cost about $2.4 billion.

“Today’s market conditions have accentuated our strengths,” said McDonald’s CEO Jim Skinner. “The time is ideal for us to further differentiate our brand and grow market share. We are determined to keep stretching our business, increasing traffic and becoming more relevant to a growing number of customers around the world.”

The Oak Brook, Ill.-based company also said it will spend $2.4 billion to “reimage” the exterior and interior of 2,300 existing McDonald’s “to be more modern, more comfortable and contemporary.” It intends to do this by improving the seating, lighting and decor and adding double-lane drive-thru stations “where it makes sense to improve speed and convenience,” said a Heidi Barker, a McDonald’s spokeswoman.

Yeah , I am in Chicago and have been watching the local renovations over the summer. I couldn't help but think of the waste. I mean out of the five stores I have seen re- modeled , the only noticeable change was the entire building was demolished to move a few inches over to make room for the new drive threw.
This is one company the world could do with out.
