All things are one and that all people are one. Our consciousness, which is the lens through which we view ourselves, gives us the illusion that we are separate and that the material world is solid when, in fact, that is no the case. Jesus, in my understanding, was trying to get that point across to ignorant and fearful tribesmen who were not aware of the nature of reality, and he spoke in parables so that they might eventually grasp his meaning. Buddha said essentially the same things, urging people to recognize that they were not finite and limited animals but were, instead, expressions of the one true creative compassion that brings everything into existence.
Neither Christ nor Buddha created or promoted an establishment of religion. Instead, both urged us to seek heaven inside of ourselves. In spite of Christ's efforts, greedy and ignorant people immediately tried to exploit his life by creating a phony and destructive political system, and they called it the Christian religion. This religion, which has over the centuries been split into many factions (each claiming to be "right"), has been responsible for the majority of wars and needless strife that have engulfed Europe and the Middle East. Now, in the United States, the descendants of the Pharisees, the Religious Right Wing, claiming to be in league with "God" have created a movement of political hatred and power politics that seeks to vest state power in the hands of its clergy, who are, in my opinion, the singular most sinister and cynical group of criminals to come down the turnpike since Attila the Hun and his army. The adversaries of the "Religious" Right, the liberal left wingers, claim that they alone know the secrets to creating a just and humane society. Just as the Right Wing postures in a holier-than-thou manner, the left Wing struts and preens, claiming moral superiority.
Neither group, in my opinion, is correct, and both are upheld by scorn and hatred of each other. While they fight, the country continues to slide into bankruptcy and civil collapse. Schools, which once were the envy of many nations, have become holding pens where students do their time as school boards fight over whether or not evolution is real.
Einstein, Jefferson, Darwin, Lincoln, Franklin, all of whom were atheists, knew that the use of religion as a cudgel is destructive to society, and they used and encouraged the use of reason to solve the material problems we face here on earth, All of these men were truly loving of their fellow humans, and they brought great benefits. I believe the Biblical phrase, "By their fruits ye shall know them,"' is applicable to these people, in that they put the love of the creator into practice through their work, not by thumping their chests in the public square and demanding that homosexuals should not marry or that women should not decide the fate of their own pregnancies. Without claiming a buddy-buddy relationship with "God," these men lived the scriptures of many religions, in spite of the fact that organized religions hated several of these men.
Therefore, while I love the man from Nazareth and what he supposedly said, I do not believe he ascended into heaven like a helium balloon. I do not believe he is the one son of a "God" that lives somewhere in space, and I do not think he would appreciate me or anyone else claiming to have special political privileges or status based upon me claiming to have a "relationship" with him. In fact, I think that would just piss him off.
I consider it my duty as a person and as a loyal American citizen to oppose the close-minded and hurtful religionists who are trying to take away my grandchildren's freedom by creating a phony "religious" country.
