Current Staffer Jumped Off Bridge

Former Current staffer, Charles Lawrence, discusses his experience at Current, their lack of professionalism and how another laid off staffer jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge:

"Let me tell you something about CurrentTV. I worked there for 3 months in late 2007. I was on the upstairs online team(we were maintaining the old website while the guys on the Embarcadero team in the basement were working on the new one). I came in to work on Sept 14 and was there for about half an hour when I was led into Al Gore’s office(he wasn’t there) and was let go. They offered no explanation and refused to tell me why I was being laid off. My experiences working there were good at the time, but I got the overall sense the company didn’t have any direction. The worst part of being laid off wasn’t the fact that they treated me INCREDIBLY unprofessionally, it was that they laid off several other people the same day in much the same manner. One of the guys that was on my team was in QA. A couple of days after they fired him (again, without giving cause), he jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge to his death."

Update: Another comment from Dave, also apparently a Current staffer:

"As I read my severance agreement, I realized that Current is not mentioning an important bit of information. Their actions have triggered the WARN Act. Moreover, when Current says that they’ve laid off 80 employees, they’re not mentioning that they plan to lay off, at least, 20 more. One of the factors that triggers the WARN Act is when a company lays off a third of its workforce. Current had about 300 US employees before today’s layoffs, so letting go of 80 employees does not set off WARN. Letting go of 100 would.

Why do I think that Current’s workforce reduction falls under WARN? Because in addition to a promised severance payment, I continue on Current’s payroll for 60 days with benefits – even though I have no obligation to perform work. What Current is doing is getting around the 60 day notification provision under WARN by continuing pay and benefits for laid off workers. In addition, my Termination Agreement states that I would release the company from any claims that it has violated the WARN act.

While Current deflects questions about more lay offs in the coming months, they’re actions cannot hide the fact that they plan to, at least, have a total of 100 employees gone by the next few months."

Can he be contacted to provide further information? This cannot go ignored.

That's terrible. :( But anyone who lets the loss of a single job affect their entire life has a bit of trouble already, I think.

Yeah, this is getting axed. Current doesn't tolerate anything that runs counter to their interests.

Little vague on the suicide....hope that angry young man wasn't making it up...start ups are a bitch...but learning how to let someone go w class is an art

  •

Man I'm so sick of hearing that same exact quote about WARN over and over again. If it really bothers you, call the police or whoever can investigate. Stop bitching about it to us, we don't care.

I'm pretty sure Current doesn't *like* laying off its workforce. But if you have more employees than you need, it just doesn't make any sense to keep them.

Moreover, getting laid off, no matter how "unprofessionally" it was carried out, is hardly an excuse for suicide.

Interesting story JonRaymond... even if it is just for the 50 people who see it before it gets squashed into cyber oblivion by the Current Mod Squad.

My guess is current thinks it will make this guy look like a douche' if they leave the story on for awhile. Then they can write him off peaceably as just another p=====d off ex-employee ranting and raving. Companies have been getting around the act the same way for a long time. Try posting a peer-reviewed article about how easy it is to do this and maybe a link to an article about a company that got caught recently. If you must rant give yourself some more credibility. If you have case present it with some professionalism, don't damage it like this. Basic law... think about it.

Too bad they have left in place those enemies of true freedom and free speech. The censors, the goodie-two shoe nannyist brown-nosers who say their pledges and think they are "politically correct" All the while they overlook that suppressing free speech just increases violence, since that is it's alternative.

I may disagree with their programming decisions and actually how some on this site favor a few over the many, but really: It's a website. I think some are blowing this out of proportion. Either that or someone just wants to implicate Al Gore in something else for another reason. Losing your job indeed sucks, I know, it's happened to me. But I moved on, looked for another job, and lived my life. This does sound like classic sour grapes.

I just got laid off a couple weeks ago, it's nothing new, pick yourself up and live your life. In this day and age, alot of people are getting laid off. You make it sound like the end of the world, it's not. Get over it.

How is it unprofessional to fire people? That's kind of what happened all this year and the end of last year.

In my industry they let go of an entire floor with no warning.

Is California a state where you have to give two weeks notice? Texas is not. I can quit when I want and they can fire me when they want.

And I know how people won't read something unless the title is attention grabbing, but when a suicide is used in such a manner it does make me sick. Anyone committing suicide is doing so for many reasons and the job isn't the main one....it's just the straw that broke the camel's back.

Ahem, tap ... tap ...tap ... is this thing on? Okay, um, THERE IS A RECESSION GOING ON!! A lot of people have been laid off. It sucks. It's terrible. But it's life. We are ALL trying to make it through these tough times. NEWS FLASH: Current is a business trying to stay afloat, too. I'm sorry if this ex-staffer killed himself over this. I'm really, really sorry. But I also don't think that Current is some evil empire trying to crush all in it's path. Sell that garbage to someone else. I ain't buying.

  •

NEWS FLASH - The economy is circling the drain, and most companies are doing this to stay afloat. Maybe someone working at a news company would keep up with such things. It's like a psychic saying "I didn't see that coming." I also agree with Elligirl, to take this so personally that you end your life reveals some underlying personal problems.

All this is so sad. I thought current was different, looking out for the underdog.
Please Current say this is not so!

Those changes a while back were symptoms of a new sucky current. The front page got all interfered with so it was no longer the same site nor same values at all. No longer a user voted and supplied forum. They axed people they didn't agree with according to their political or religious agendas. Instead of a news source it has become just another "program you" site. You can only say something if it doesn't offend anyone. And if anyone claims you are a hater, they just call you a hateful bigot and banish you. Free speech prevents violence!
