Officials to inspect Illinois jail for Guantánamo inmates
Officials from the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Department of Defense were expected Monday at the Thomson Correctional Center, about 150 miles west of Chicago.
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin say the potential sale could help create about 3,000 jobs in the economically depressed area.
But critics, including Republican members of Congress from Illinois, have been quick to condemn the prospect of the sale because of safety concerns.
Federal officials are considering Thomson along with a facility in Colorado and a site in Montana.

good intentions, i suppose. with a 10.5% unemployment rate, i don't know how much worse things could get for the town.
but it IS kind of a weird idea to me, especially as an illinois resident. what happens if they somehow escape? i think the "what if" questions are the ones that really turn people against this idea. it also makes you wonder, would it really actually benefit the town? of course it would create jobs, but would it encourage people to move there? the elderly woman interviewed in this article says that there are hardly any young people living there anymore & that all the older folks are dying off, leaving the town with a steadily decreasing population. but are people's desire for work stronger than their fear of a potential escape of a terrorist detainee? i think that's the real question here.
one thing i'm unclear about: why exactly does the obama administration want to shut down guantanamo bay anyway?

Well most of the employees that would be working there would be from Clinton Iowa. They wanted to open that prison a few years back. They wanted to close down Pontiac State Pen and open Thomson. They didnt because the city of Pontiac ILL would have suffered a HUGE tax lose from all the jobs the prison provides. The other concern was most of the jobs would go to people in Iowa. Clinton Iowa being very close and one of the larger cities in the area. I know, I lived within 10 miles of that prison. I still live within 35 or so miles of it.
On another note, what a great way for obama to pay back the democrats in ILL. All that federal money flooding into the state. The Chicago demcrats and their political machine rolls on. Elected thugs. Nothing more, nothing less.
