"This is a picture without much information in it; nevertheless, it's a powerful image," says photojournalist Gary Braasch, whose exhibition Climate Change in Our World opened last week at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C.The photo was shot in an Antarctic ice cave inside Marr Glacier, Anvers Island, which, like many glaciers and ice shelves around the edges of Antarctica, has been receding. The ice cave melted away several years ago.
"It shows both that humans are melting the ice and our curiosity about the natural world," Braasch says.
"There's an abstractness about climate change when talked about in policy terms or legislation," Braasch says. "It gets extremely esoteric. For me, before too long, the most interested person loses touch with what's happening to our planet - that is the reason why my photos are so powerful, as they can connect you back to the human element and the landscape where changes are very obvious."

This photo, in which roughly 90 Bangladeshis gather on the eroded end of a road in their village on Bhola Island, shows just how powerful that human element can be.
"The most surprising thing for me was the emotional impact of including people in the landscape," Braasch says. "You don't even have to read the caption to have an emotional connection with these villagers in Bangladesh who are being affected by rising tides as a result of global warming. All these people in the photo produce the same amount of CO2 as one American."
