It doesn't only look beautiful, and it would make Jon Ive and Steve Jobs wet, but this naked Coca-Cola can would help save energy while reducing air and water pollution. Would it really make a difference? Let's do some math:I assume the consumption only increases through time, but let's take the daily 2007 numbers from Global INForM Cases Sales database: The total number of Coca-Cola cans sold per worldwide is 67,873,309. Diet Coke and Coke Zero sold 35,387,241, while My Coke sold 103,260,550. Yes, that's all per day.
So using only classic Coca-Cola's daily sales figures, that means 24,773,757,785 are sold every year. Twenty-four billion cans. That is indeed a lot of paint and paint removal products. Because this doesn't only affect the production. It also affects the recycling process, eliminating one step:
The naked can help to reduce air and water pollution occurred in its coloring process. It also reduces energy and effort to separate toxic color paint from aluminum in recycling process. Huge amount of energy and paint required to manufacture colored cans will be saved. Instead of toxic paint, manufacturers process aluminum with a pressing machine that indicates brand identity on surface.
Sounds good to me, and it even looks better if you take into account all kinds of Coke. That brings up the number to 75,380,201,500 cans. I don't know how much paint that represents, but I'm guessing quite a few thousand tons.

I'm all for natural looking stuff. None of this slick artificial mixed collors. Brushed metal, pewter, glass!
Hey, we used to pay a few pennys extra for the bottle of pop then got our pennies back when we returned the bottles.
Mom kept the cardboard six pack container near the coat hooks, on the floor, when you finished the pop you rinsed out the bottle and stuck in the container and on your way out the door to the store you picked it up returned it to the front of the store and got your refund.
Incentive. Just like Aldi's grocery carts: you get your quarter back when you return it to it's proper place!
If everyone would be accountable for their share we could save the world ,without spending millions of dollars on the mess(es) we wouldn't make! - 4 months ago

This is A damn good idea with far reaching applications and possibilities. Shop at Costco and you won't have to concern yourself about Coke!!!! Pepsi is better in my opinion but they both are bad for your health, but how many products these days are really good for your health anyhow...
And as an after thought, why are they singling out *Coke?? Aren't most all cans without paper labels painted in one way or another???? - 4 months ago

What about the jobs that are produced by painting coke cans?
Is this move not a nightmare for some large paint producing company?
How many people would be put out work to switch to this design? And, does the environmental impact outweigh the need for those jobs? - 4 months ago

The red Coke can is certainly part of their brand, but I think that Coke would have no problem overcoming this small change. I don't care if the Coke can is red or metallic colored. Heck, if they jump on it before any other brand, they can easily rebrand their color(s) as metallic, natural, and environmentally friendly.
The only hindrance might be on how to differentiate cans for regular, diet, and caffeine free Cokes.

While beautiful, the design doesn't take into account a lot of the regulations about including ingredients on the product as well as a bar code for scanning it for purchase and stock maintenance.
In the end, they'd have to produce a sticker with that info which would defeat the purpose to begin with.

This is a great idea. Even if coke would switch this to thier "diet coke" or even "coke zero" look, it would significantly reduce energy use. And I'm sure it would save coca-cola from spending excess money on paint. It would sit well with "green" people and maybe bring more jazz about thier products. I hope they see this idea and seriously do this.

Um, I think this means that eating lots of fructose is bad, and fructose is in both high fructose corn syrup and table sugar.
So hfcs isn't any more of a toxin than regular sugar, but chemicals used in the manufacturing process along with the abundance of corn allow food companies to fill their products with cheap possibly slightly contaminated sugar. - 4 months ago

Table sugar is not fructose. Table sugar is called sucrose and comes from sugar beets or sugarcane. As different from fructose as milk sugar (lactose) is from Table Sugar, or maltose aka grain sugar. They are all very different beasts, FYI. - 4 months ago

Tao, according to Wikipedia sucrose is a "disaccharide of glucose and fructose," so table sugar has fructose, it is also mentioned in the article that jkw linked to that "Fructose is a component of the two most popular sugars. One is table sugar — sucrose. The other is high-fructose corn syrup."

Why are we so wrapped up in the aesthetics of a f*cking coke can? It shouldn't have any paint for the mere fact of less toxic paint and reducing energy. I hate how visually inclined we are. All we care about is how it looks in our hand when someone sees us from across the street. They should have done this a long time ago, and once we found the risks with aluminum, not used it because of the health issues involved.
