As a trainer of recruiters, I can tell you this video expresses the frustration of job-seekers who don't know how to use LinkedIn properly. Recruiters use it for hiring far more than Facebook, Twitter, etc., and LinkedIn caters its functionality to them, being the plurality of its paid customers.
If you don't have a large network >10MM, then stop limiting your 1st degree network to your best friends; tap open networkers on TopLinked.com, etc., free to find superconnectors to build your network quickly, and use the free and 100% legal LinkedIn search hack on Google and Yahoo, innovated by Shally Steckerl in 2005 (which still works well!) to find hiring managers and others by specific job title, company name and/or location beyond your 3-degree network (see http://aces.arbita.net/node/714 ).
Yes, there's a grain of truth in that some recruiters peddle products to job-seekers as another revenue stream, but many of them are free (e.g., see my post at http://aces.arbita.net/blog/two-free-job-hunting-recorded-seminars that lists two great ones).

I found your video on http://lawyerist.com and left a comment.. thought I would leave one here as well.
This is absolutely hilarious.
Yep, it can be just like the garden in my backyard.
I planted everything, watched the shows, read the books, went to the meetings… came back at harvest time and nothing was there. What the heck?Guess the video could emphasize the human condition? (the hammer doesn’t swing itself) Or it could also show the cracks in the tool / platform. (but isn’t anything only as good as those participating?)
Off to share it on Krumlr, Twitter, etc. now…
I am very impressed. You made me smile and think at the very same time. (smink)
Your new fan.

I love this stuff: excellent. However, it is only partially true. People must be active on LinkedIn to build their reputation. So add discussions, answer questions and share news. Hey, I think the Boss looks like Barack. Doesn't he?

Funny Video, and some truth, but only for those who do not know how to use LinkedIn properly. Like any social networking tool, or social media tool, creativity is key to getting value from it. From a recruiting and name sourcing view, I can reference key placements made by using LinkedIn. But, LinkedIn was just one piece of the puzzle. Usually the value is by providing initial communication. Yet, if you blow it after that, that's your fault and not the initial tool. It's not perfect, but there are ways to make it work. http://search-news-views.blogspot.com/. Feel free to connect with me - http://www.linkedin.com/in/justinsivey

Very funny, but a shame that it is promoting the negative side of linked in. It is like any recruitment tool, if you dont know how to use it then you are not going to get anything out of it. Just becuase you are on linked in doesnt mean you are suddenly going to get hundreds of job offers, but it does mean that if an employer is looking for talent on LI and your profile stands out, you may have a chance of being approached.

LinkedIn, just like anything else, is simply one "tool" (out of many) that can be used in the job search and is *not* meant to be the end all/be all or the solution to all job seekers. And as is the case with most things, it (gasp) may not work for everyone the same way or at all and as someone else pointed out, it doesn't work if you don't use it effectively.
Do you people really think your profile is just going to do the work and find a job for you? It's still up to the user to reach out, generate connections and develop relationships and to that end, LI is making it very easy to gently nudge people in the direction of networking, but they aren't going to teach you or do it for you! Networking requires more than just making a connection - you have to to take the next step, follow up and build relationships
However, for those that think that LI wasn't built for the purpose of the job search - take a look at the fine print in the footer of your LI pages where they list their "recruiting" solutions. There is more than just your "privacy" at stake as to why they don't open up the "network" to all 50M users - they make a lot of $$ selling access to the entire user network to recruiters.

Next year when you become a manager and you need to spec out some automation samplers, you'll love Linkedin. Until then, check out the Q & A, join the conversations out there, become an industry expert, develop your personal brand as a Lab Assistant. You never know when you'll be looking for a new job.

The Q&A section is second to none when you have a question for a particular industry. I challenge the naysayers to explore some of the other features if you're really looking for jobs, connections, answers.

As Cinefile writes below, the video is misleading and complete nonsense. The LinkedIn portal is not built for purpose of job search, even that it has that feature, rather for peering , connection or re-connecting with your professional friends and other contacts. How you end up using the available features is solely up to you and no one guarantees you anything other then ability to advertise yourself and establish new connections, or re-build relationships you once had. See who does business with whome, use those contacts as potential business leads and similar. To expect anything more then that is simply dumb! If I was LinkedIn legal, I would take some level of action against the producer of this dumb video since misinformation can be damaging. I will comment that recently LinkedIn added feature that its users can combine their accounts with their Twitter accounts, which in some way can be useful, however it appears to be very annoying since some morons on people contacts think that now that LinkedIn gave them Twitter feature they can send any kind of status update including how they might be listening this song or that song while they eat pancakes in the local diner (simply some are starting to treat LinkedIn like other social networking portals which is idiotic, to say the least!). Way around it is to block them away or completely remove those contacts.

Very funny, but not really true. I've found my LinkedIn network gives me connections to companies that I am interested in, and I've been approached by recruiters more times than I can count. LinkedIn is not an end in itself, but - if your connections, recommendations and of course your resume are up to it - it'll help you find out about open positions and land the job you're looking for. In the last six years or so, it's been instrumental in my getting my current position and the two prior to that. But that doesn't make for a great satirical video, of course.

This video is hugely misleading and quite unfair to the Linkedin in site. First, the site never claims to find you a job. That really isn't the point of it. Linkedin benefits people who are genuinely interested in networking for business reasons and for establishing contacts with industry people who may be able to help you with your business endeavors and/or ideas. I also find that the Linkedin forums and groups are possibly the best social groups system I've ever found in terms actually providing quality information to the user. The groups featured on Linked can be a tremendous source for quality information to help your business. You just need to know how to use the website it correctly. I might assume whoever created this video is not very serious about business or knowing what it takes to grow one.

If you play on facebook and linkedIn all day you'll get yourself in trouble. If you wait until you get layed off to create your accounts and try to network, you'll seem desperate. However, if you keep track of all your professional associations over time, you'll build up a large group of leads to tap into when you need to job hunt again.
