Climate Emails Stoke Debate

"The scientific community is buzzing over thousands of emails and documents -- posted on the Internet last week after being hacked from a prominent climate-change research center -- that some say raise ethical questions about a group of scientists who contend humans are responsible for global warming.

The correspondence between dozens of climate-change researchers, including many in the U.S., illustrates bitter feelings among those who believe human activities cause global warming toward rivals who argue that the link between humans and climate change remains uncertain.

Some emails also refer to efforts by scientists who believe man is causing global warming to exclude contrary views from important scientific publications.

"This is horrible," said Pat Michaels, a climate scientist at the Cato Institute in Washington who is mentioned negatively in the emails. "This is what everyone feared. Over the years, it has become increasingly difficult for anyone who does not view global warming as an end-of-the-world issue to publish papers. This isn't questionable practice, this is unethical."

In all, more than 1,000 emails and more than 2,000 other documents were stolen Thursday from the Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University in the U.K. The identity of the hackers isn't certain, but the files were posted on a Russian file-sharing server late Thursday, and university officials confirmed over the weekend that their computer had been attacked and said the documents appeared to be genuine.

In the emails, which date to 1996, researchers in the U.S. and the U.K. repeatedly take issue with climate research at odds with their own findings. In some cases, they discuss ways to rebut what they call "disinformation" using new articles in scientific journals or popular Web sites.

The emails include discussions of apparent efforts to make sure that reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations group that monitors climate science, include their own views and exclude others. In addition, emails show that climate scientists declined to make their data available to scientists whose views they disagreed with.

The IPCC couldn't be reached for comment Sunday."

Global Warming or Global Governance? The Carbon Tax is a Ponzi Scheme invented by Ken Lay from Enron. Its all about taxing CO2, which plants require to breathe, in a bait-and-switch con to ration natural resources and make billions controlling our lives. It has nothing to do with the environment and the science is a fraud. Now it is exposed.

    • not everyone who is a skeptic in this area is on the right, there are people in the middle and on the left who also skeptical as well. Many of us harbor very different concerns about the current theory of global warming. i for one am concerned that land use changes play a bigger role in warming than is currently acknowledged or understood. Land use problems will not be solved by any of the current methods of dealing with greenhouse gas issues. I think the focus gets taken off types of pollution that will have a greater impact than greenhouse gases such as fertilizer runoff and toxic waste being dumped into the rivers and oceans.

I am willing to admit I could be wrong. I'm not crazy, I love science and science requires transparency, the openess of data to scrutiny and inquiry. if i'm not allowed to question it, then it isn't science.

Both "sides" of this "debate" are often rude to each other and I think that is a real shame. If we could listen to each other's theories and explanations I think everyone could learn alot.

    • The core issue here is totalitarianism.

DDT was the spearhead of the WHO campaign to eradicate Malaria. Violet Carsons book "Silent Spring" , triggering the Environmentalist movement, lead to DDT being banned. The first big "Green" victory. Malaria remains endemic throughout much of the world. Since DDT was banned it has killed at least 100 million people. Ergo, Environmentalism has been responsible for more deaths than Hitler and Stalin together. Truly, it deserves a place alongside the worst totalitarian dogmas in Human history.

    • Whatever the opinionated emails may contain, the fact that we are polluting the world into oblivion is not myth or something akin to "belief".

I'm not quite sure why people on "the right" take such a contrarian view of this issue. Is it just to be contrary or are they really so far up Glenn Beck's ass that there's no light of day?

It's not a debate. It's not hucksterism. We are warming the planet you morons.

    • Stoke debate?
I think confirm facts of reality is more like it.
Al Gore is being exposed as the money grubbing huckster he really is.
Al Gore is really a lot like the Sunday morning preachers who plead for money to save your souls.
Instead, Al wants us to buy his carbon credits to save the planet.
      Whadda fraud.
Beyond that, the high priests and acolytes of this movement are revealed to be an insecure and violence prone group of people who really cannot defend what they term science, because, there is no science.
