The Roman Catholic archdiocese of Dublin obsessively covered up widespread sexual abuse of children by priests until the mid-1990s in a misuse of the Church's central role in Irish society, an official report said on Thursday.

The government-commissioned inquiry into abuse in the Irish capital from 1975 to 2004, which came six months after a similarly damning report about Church-run industrial and reform schools, also accused state officials of abetting the cover-up.

The report, designed to show how church and state responded to charges of abusing children, said a representative sample of 46 priests made "abundantly clear" that it was widespread.

    • 'maybe suppression of natural inherent urges like the need to procreate causes deviant behavior?'

      Yes

'A new monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to help the other monks in copying the old texts by hand. He notices, however, that they are copying copies, and not the original books.

So, the new monk goes to the head monk to ask him about this. He points out that if there was an error in the first copy, that error would be continued in all of the other copies. The head monk says, "We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son."

So, he goes down into the cellar with one of the copies to check it against the original. Hours later, nobody has seen him. So, one of the monks goes downstairs to look for him. He hears sobbing coming from the back of the cellar and finds the old monk leaning over one of the original books crying. He asks what's wrong.

"The word is celebrate not celibate," says the old monk with tears in his eyes.'

Wow robidog, you are amazing. Did you read "The Name of the Rose"?

That is exactly what has happened. The originals are locked away in private collections that may never see the light of day again, for them to be uncovered and widely circulated, the corruption of the Church would become manifest and its death would immediately follow.

    • Throughout the history church has been powerful, controlling and often corrupt entity. The dark secrets are very sad facts but not surprising. Being religious does not prove high level of spirituality.

On the other hand, the Vatican has special clinics in which they regularly perform abortions on nuns who became pregnant with their nunnery's priests. Talk about double standards...

    • When will we protect our children rather than save face?? Why do we allow for these things to go virtually unpunished?? These things are swept under the rug to allow us to feel better about ourselves and our religions....

    • Another reason for people to stay away from churches and do their praying at their homes. There are to many pedophiles in Religion overall to think it's safe and have your children around them.

There's no need for churches and the help they receive from people, when they themselves don't take care of their people.

Great posting Vierotchka and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone here!!

    • A hidden world protected by the church ... honey to a bee.

I was brought up in a Christian Brother's College. While at that school there were 3 pedophiles. One was transferred to our school for abusing young boys in another state. Luckily no one was abused as far as I know, two boys where approached and called the alarm.

There was an interesting documentary on the subject years ago. One priest opened up on camera, saying that their thinking was that if you abuse the boys they'll be psychologically twisted enough to join the church and continue the cycle.

It's all really sick stuff. Anyone working with children should be thoroughly checked out and tested and monitored.

    • Is it that Catholic priesthood attracts pedophiles, or is it the conditioning that trainee priests go through that creates pedophilia in them?

    • Vierotchka:

In my opinion, pedophiles are attracted to the church as a means to gain access to vulnerable children. There is no "conditioning" process to create pedophiles that does not involve conscious, willing participation from the pedophile, himself.

    • Vierotchka:

Actually there is conditioning but it has to start when a person is a child. Most pedophiles were victims of pedophilia as young children. It is rare to find one that was not abused as a child and the data depends on the honesty of the subject.

    • Vierotchka:

I agree with the first two comments. I think people are born pedophiles, just like people are born gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered. It is something in their psychogenetic makeup that determines sexuality. Although I think that many pedophiles were abused sexually as children, not all children abused sexually become pedophiles. Hence that is why I draw the conclusion of them "being born that way."

I am bisexual and I was sexually molested, but I am most certainly not a pedophile. I loathe the idea of children, especially at the age I was; 12, being abused. Where it gets gray for me is when children are 16 or 17. Many of these young men and women could be mistaken for someone 18 or more. Also, it wasn't just 60 years ago that in several states people 15 and older could get married without their parents consent.

What I don't agree with is mandatory sentencing that doesn't take into consideration the actual circumstances of the case, whether the "adult" really new that the "child" they were having sex with was "underage".

    • Vierotchka:

Jubal, let me clarify. I did not mean to imply that all victims of sexual abuse as children become pedophiles. I do believe that most pedophiles were sexually abused as children. When you are a child and you are indoctrinated into a behavior and you do not have the experience or maturity to realize that it is causing harm or can cause harm to others, it is difficult to break a habit. You may have a point about genetic disposition. I do think that this disorder has a nurture and nature component though.

We are essentially saying the same thing. We aren't in disagreement. Thank your for clarifying, I didn't think negatively of your statement at all, I was adding to it for my own clarification as well.
