The opportunity to jab yourself in the eye with a tiny computer display is one step closer, thanks to the ongoing work with opto-electronic contact lenses taking place at the University of Washington in Seattle. The lab there has been showing off the latest prototype, the handiwork of Dr. Babak Parviz: a semi-transparent array – including an LED – embedded into a contact lens that receives 330 microwatts of power wirelessly from a nearby RF transmitter. Parviz has been using the prototypes to display biosensor feedback about the wearer’s vital signs, but they’ll eventually serve as a heads-up display for displaying other data.

    • I think this is the craziest invention to be prototyped so far. Knowing that there are people driving on the road while texting and not paying attention is scary enough but having people who are surfing the net while driving and....a bit more scary.

    • sounds like a great innovation and risk
how would you control the video?
      if the screen froze?
also the adult film industry would never be the same lol.

    • The future will be bad ass, but I'll let other people try it out first before I get the news "You have eye cancer, likely caused by your contact."

    • Very cool, hopefully we'll see more steps in this awesome direction. I just think it would be so damn cool to have an integrated HUD for daily life. Long ways away until we'll actually see it being used, but still awesome.

    • This is also impossible seeing as your eyes can only focus at .4 inches from your pupil. For example try to read this screen or any piece of paper less then a half an inch away.

    • I know some of you folks think this is the greatest thing in the world. I myself think this is one step closer to the mind control that the goverment whats. Things like this can do a world of good . How ever I see a lot of evil coming from it also. There is something in me that says this is wrong. I don't know how to explane it but this just gives me the willies. To much like a brain inplant. But like I said for those that like it and can't wait for it to be main stream more power to you. Just hope that it does you no harm.

They said it needs RF transmitter for power and it is only a display. This will talk to the Intel chip in your brain and the RFID tag in your arm. Unless freedom is some how discovered in America. :'-(

I get the feeling people were saying the same thing back when the telephone and PC made their debut. But here you are posting a comment on an internet article connecting with millions of people. It doesn't matter what kind of tech they come out with they're always going to be intelligent people who eat this stuff up and use it to their advantage. And if that's not true user generated content wouldn't exist.

The printing press lead to more freedom in thought. The radio did the same. The internet did the same. It is possible this technology could do the same.
However, if it is controlled by one company for any significant period of time after it's "launch" then that effect will be controlled.

    • Contact lenses freak me out too - something about touching the eye ... eek!

However, it is possible to get a glasses style headset. If these are then combined with a head mounted sports-cam, a net book and a little techno geekery, could provide a similar augmented reality.

    • calpal, i generally dont find them that much of a hassle, yes on occasion they hurt like a bitch, but for the most part you forget you have even got them in, and having a heads up display i think would be really cool, showing the date, time and other such bollocks that you usually need. a compass would be great! can you imagine that? a self orientating compass, it would help explorers navigate seamlessly! i feel like a lightbulb has just been lit up over my head!

But they are never easier putting in than, say, glasses...

Besides, if I felt like not seeing data and just looking at the world normally, I would prefer glasses because they come off so much easier, whereas with contacts, you have to find a mirror and a case to hold them in temporarily... might not matter if there was an 'off' option, but still, I stand by my case, both here and in my last point.

glasses are the pain. You never forget you have them on, they pinch the nose, they pinch the side of my head, I can't wear sunglasses over them, they become a liability in sports, they slide around, I'm BLIND when I go swimming (at least with contacts I can see when my head is above the water)

I couldn't disagree with you more, contacts are a cinch to get in. They gave me some trouble earlier on, but they're in and out in 15 seconds nowadays

    • This technology actually scares me. Equipping the general public with this type of technology is a great idea. Condisering that public schools have dropped the national average. We edge closer to a world of "Idiocracy."

True, but with the contacts, when the level of someone's power is able to increase past 9000, then we would avoid people breaking the glasses while said person screams the power level.

    • If anyone actually uses contacts, you'd know it is a b**ch to put them in your eyes, no matter how advanced they make them; it's just impossible to make it any more easier to put them in your eyes, and if you got dirt on them while trying to put them in, well, that hurts like hell...

In my honest opinion, we shouldn't try using display on contacts, just because of how annoying they are... I would actually recommend glasses over contacts regarding displaying data... besides you could fit more data on glasses.

I've never had any problems with my contacts. It takes me a second to put them on or take them off.
Also, there's no data being stored on the contact lens, it's just a display- like a monitor.
