Meet the people who are killing the planet (and putting an end to "global warming is a myth"

Rolling Stone decided to start the year off by kicking ass and taking numbers…or rather, announcing names and pointing fingers in their article, The Climate Killers Meet the 17 polluters and deniers who are derailing efforts to curb global warming.

It’s about time there was a public hit-list of people who aren’t for the planet. (After all, it’s very publicized technique used by several climate change deniers who will not be named). Over all it’s an informative article that examined the influence of thoughts, money, and action across sectors. The author clearly had fun creating clever nicknames for the offenders, such as the Flip Flopper (Dick Gephardt) and The Arm Twister (David Ratcliff). Unfortunately I found the tone of the piece off putting in the moments when it came dangerously close to stooping to name calling. The way I see it, we (the people who are actively in the pursuit of securing a way to live sustainably on the planet) do not have time for name calling. Everything that is said and written needs to be impeccable and supported by facts, not just emotion and a sense of, “this is just the right thing to do.” (I realize this is ironic coming from someone who spews nothing but opinions. Shoot. Now that I think about it, I wouldn’t be undeserving of a t-shirt that says, “Hi. My name is pot. I call tea kettles black.”)

But here’s what kills me, after an article that names some of the most dangerous polluters in regard to the environment and ideas, the first comment on the article says, “global warming is a myth.” I keep wondering what can we do to shift the conversation? HEEELLLOOO~ they just listed 17 people that are in the active pursuit of hurting the state of the planet and the entire conversation resorts to the broken record statement of “global warming is a myth”. It feels like there is no way out of the “Yes!” “No!” shouting match about the legitimacy of if climate change will affect people’s ability to survive on the planet. It is pointless to engage in a conversation about if Al Gore’s plan is to take over the planet and rule the economic system.

So (gasp), what would happen if we turned in a different direction and focused on making sure we have clean water to drink, clean air to breathe, clean soil to grow our food in? What if we replace “global warming” with “healthy planet”? Would it change the conversation? Would we still get the same number of people saying, “Healthy planet is a myth!!” And if so, how would that influence the conversation? Would it refocus us on the task at hand and give our minds a break about conspiracies, lies, and motivations?

    • I love that this article brings to light the fact that we are more stuck on our different points of views about the "global warming debate" and playing the right or wrong game than actually working together to salvage our home. Its childish and ridicolous, its like stading in a burning house with a friend arguing about what could have started the fire instead of simply putting the fire out . So at the end of the day it doesn't matter who was right or who was wrong cause the our home will have been destroyed. Lets concentrate on the undeniable truth, yes, undeniable fact that most of the planets population treat the earth like $%!t. Simply put its about individual responsibility.

    • I probably have a broader definition of 'politics' than most people ... I mean politics (hopefully) in the manner Foucault would - being critical of mainstream, social institutions and by analyzing power relationships.

A magazine taking a stance against environmental agitators on non-recycled paper squarely fits that definition.

But the real issues here are hypocrisy, ignorance and greed.

    • I need to see more damage(evidence) that there are serious repercussions of high co2 levels. Once Florida is gone I will reevaluate the situation.

      Hey Leah,

They don't even use recycled paper! What a bunch of freaking hypocrites!!

Check out this insane quote by the deputy managing editor:

“We think recycled paper is great. But we’re publishing some of the world’s greatest photographers and artists,” and the print quality on recycled paper does not do them justice, said Eric Bates, deputy managing editor of Rolling Stone.

I will never buy another Copy of Rolling Stone EVER!!!!!!!

    • It's not about global warming or cooling- one can create whatever one wants to 'see'. We are all killing the planet, it's just that some are willing to take responsibility for their actions. This is called a paradigm shift, what it comes down to is not an us and them issue. It's about when it happens for you, not to you... it really is the journey of many that bring us all back to each other, especially now. It's really quite imperative to allow each unique individual journey to find it's own way.

    • But yet the title of this states, "meet the people who are killing the planet"... It is us we are killing by our own hand. But it's a waste of time trying to get certain people to even understand that at this point. We should have passed that point years ago. If all we are going to do for the rest of this year is continue to pander to those who won't and don't want to get it anyway, we certainly will then reach that tipping point.

    • PirateSause~ You raise an important point. So often times we misuse our words (I can be accused of this) and say, "save the planet". The planet will be fine~ I'm more worried about it's inhabitants.

    • Thanks for this article leahl ...

".......Would we still get the same number of people saying, “Healthy planet is a myth!!” "

Probably, although I love it when I am wrong. The denial of this situation, no matter what the cause, and the denial of what we put in our bodies and environment affects us, is a similar consciousness - an archetype of person whose "vision" and sensitivity is suppressed, along with an inability to be able to see past one's nose (this is where having a large nose could be advantageous), goes along with an unconscious reasoning to enable one not to take responsibility or action - many addictions people have are wrapped about the "products" "fast food" "quick fix give me somethin' material and cheap now so i feel o.k." that are a large part of the problem.

Fast food, television, toxic food, bad pharmaceuticals and other elements all contribute to a mental haze that does not enable the human mind to cognize and make connections either about the planet or their own bodies. Whilst their heads are buried in network television and stuff like aspartame and flouride coursing through their brains and bodies you will be able to observe a person who is not able to function fully - there is a "deadening" of the senses, a dulling of awareness - the bright spark we each have is flattened.

Only my opinion (and i know nothing), but time and focus is better spent on taking positive action (in integrity with planet and self) and analysis of what we can do in the now, immediately, and being that which we wish to see, is probably a lot more constructive than spinning our wheels in frustration at those who are not able to cognize the situation we are in. A wise friend once told me "you can' teach pigs to sing" (no offense to pigs meant here)...

Let us focus on the good and positive, the breakthroughs we have had, celebrate the gardens and sanctuaries we are creating for our insects, animals and plants... Focus on the love we can give this beautiful world, and not enable the frustrating inaction and ignorance of others to bring us down - the higher our collective energies vibe the better the chance we have of healing ourselves and this world we depend upon for life.

By the way, I see a lot more people being "positive" and conscientious than i did ten years ago... slow progress indeed when you see what is at stake (oops I don't need a scientist to tell me what is going on or what to do either), but let us keep the eye on the ball of light we do have going on....

    • Enough with the global warming bullshit. It's COLD and the planet is going to be just fine. Don't be ignorant and think some humans are going to KILL the planet after all these billions of years.

The planet is going to be here millions of years longer than all of us.

    • PirateSauce:

Perhaps you can explain why a majority of the world's leading scientists have come to the same conclusion over the past 2 or 3 decades, that humans are indeed affecting the weather patterns of this planet.

Then convince me that the small handful of far-right leaning folks & greedy businessmen are somehow the only ones who are untouched by the so-called delusion of it all.

The term, "Global Warming" may be misleading. "Global Climate Change" is closer to the idea.

    • i hope it all goes up in smoke. there would be some undeniable proof in that and then policy wouldnt matter any way, just action, or rather, reaction. and therein lies the truth and most important point to the whole debate. do we want to put ourselves in the position of acting and possibly hedging the problem, or reacting once the damage is done. even if there is no big green monster lurking over the horizon do we benefit from being unprepared, and like the opinion of the article says, wheres the harm in a healthier planet.

    • I believe there are two kinds of people...Activists or Terrorists...If you don't choose your side, it WILL be chosen for you. Most of our water is polluted beyond repair and we are depleting more water than what can naturally be replenished. This is real people.

Do you know what it looks like when you die of dehydration? Ironically, it feels like you're drowning.

    • I can't support Rolling Stone enough right. I love that they named names and pointed fingers. I know there is a lot of debate about global warming right now but this shouldn't be about conservatives and liberals fighting for the sake of fighting. We all live on this planet and all you have to do is look around to realize it's polluted.

    • even if global warming is a myth, which I don't believe for a second, there is still all the extreme weather. Something's happening, and everybody would like to scream at the top of thier lungs about what is not causing it rather than try to figure out how we can live with the changes. It's time we all opened our eyes and took a good look around. Record cold, record heat, massive storms, massive earthquakes, too much snow, not enough rain disease and famine. When is everybody going to realize that while the human race is extremly adaptable, we're not going to be able to withstand these changes without some serious changes ourselves.

    • I suppose the first response here gave you your answer. I give up talking to these 'idiots.' And yes, I namecalled because after YEARS of talking 'nice' and backing it up with facts, I think it IS actually time to call it like it is. They are liars, shills, and accomplices in crimes against nature who are destroying this planet for the future with their political and ideological Idiocy. And I WILL fight them, unlike those who seem to think being 'nice' is going to work at this point. And that includes the deniers on this site who are given interviews and treated like stars here but who don't contribute anything of substance. What does this planet and the future of our species really mean to us? Who are we? Is it all just play acting here?

    • JanforGore:

I don't want that. It isn't about me, but thanks for revealing where your mind is. What I care about is mediocrity being accepted so readily here. And climate denial is the epitome of mediocrity. And when did it become so fashionable here to attack the members of this site who have been here from DAY ONE and who have been the most loyal, prolific and sincere in their endeavors? No wonder most of them are now gone.

mojojuju, actually JanforGore was the FIRST person interviewed. That's because she has contributed the most and clearly is a wonderful, devoted spirit. And no, she is not of the Gaia, pro-nuclear power, fake environmentalist, taking over the world religion.

    • I want to find these people who experience global warming cause the temperatures going down for the past 10 years. The book published by the founders of the Club of Rome in early 70's stated that the idea of Global Warming "would fit the bill" of uniting humanity against itself.

"Greenies" are blind believers, just like communists, fascists and other mobs fascinated by slogans. No one will tell me that we are the main contributor to climate change and Sun is secondary. It's like saying that an ant can make changes to the landscape faster than an earthquake.

If you track the sources of "Global Warming" theory, its "facts" and its promoters history, you will see that these people are the the same who guide global economy and pollute when it fits their agenda.

      Cheers
