Leno was wrong. It was a mistake to take the 10 p.m. prime time spot. He should have walked to Fox or ABC or HBO. If it were me, I never would be loyal to a boss who disrespected me as much as the honchos at NBC have done over the years.
From the moment Prime Time Jay was announced, most people assumed the show would not work, including Jeff Zucker, NBC president and CEO. He’s the guy who convinced Leno to take the job. At the time, he said he was willing to take lower ratings, but it would be worth it because the show cost so much less to produce.
In other words, putting Jay in that time slot was not a creative decision so much as it was a financial one. And therein lies NBC’s problem. When you make programming decisions about money, it inevitably comes back to bite you in the ass.
