WASHINGTON — Reeling from the loss of a long-held Massachusetts Senate seat, Democrats are rethinking the lessons of Barack Obama’s 2008 election, with the GOP cheerfully suggesting they scale back their ambitions and agenda.

Republican Scott Brown’s win in a liberal state will do more than vastly complicate Obama’s bid to overhaul the U.S. health care system. It will send his party into a painful re-examination of voters’ anger and desires ahead of the November elections for Congress, governorships and state legislatures.

    • The notion that this 1 senate seat can derail health care reform is nothing more than conservative spin. The Democrats still have a 9 seat lead in the senate. You do not need a super majority to pass reform. This election just gives the GOP the power to filibuster and delay the inevitable.

    • You do realize that the Dems still have a large majority, right? Also, I hope you realize that the state Scott Brown represents has mandated healthcare.

    • I would disagree. Many conservatives do not believe that destroying life in the womb is healthcare. It is racist genocide. Coakley despises religious liberties. She believes Christians should leave their faith at church on Sundays, rather than live it. I was happy that she got trounced by Brown. It is the voters saying that they are sick of Obama's ####, his lies, and his spending billions of dollars of taxpayer $$ for pet projects like the fiasco of Clash for Clunkers. Yes, a happy day, indeed.

why are you bringing up abortions? what does abortions have to do with a corrupt insurance industry that is bankrupting the country? Are you seriously willing to get in the way of helping others with proper health care and with out the fear of debt, al because you have a difference with another persons beliefs? The First Amendment's clause about freedom of religion also means freedom 'from' religion. If you think abortions are wrong, then dont get one woman. Voting for Brown has nothing to do with Obama. Coakley sucked as a Democrat nominee. I dont want a talking head from either side, left or right. I want to see an independent person that never acknowledges religious beliefs, that wants to take care of the planet and the life on it, human and all others. I may just have to be that person.

    • the left- all brains, no balls
the right- all balls, no brains
everyone claims to care about this country, and for each other.
do unto others, as you would have them do to you.
yet here we are fighting for popularity while everything seems to be crashing and burning.
Republicans do not want health care reform, then offer a solution to devastating problem that we face that is bankrupting everyone, and leaving millions uninsured.
Republicans fear Obama is indoctrinating the youth with education reform; then offer a solution to our failing education system. India has more honor grads ever year then the U.S. has in children all together.
We need to work together. Right or Left, independent, we all need solutions.
