Democratic strategist criticizes DNC's desperate tactics..

Reporting from Washington — Democratic strategist Joe Trippi was critical Wednesday of making "foreign money" a major campaign theme for the White House. During a brief telephone interview, he said he would not have involved the president in making a charge that does not appear to have much evidence to support it.

"My reaction? Get on to talking about the issues. This is not going to do much. From what I see, there isn't a violation of the law."

Trippi said that it was not right to have the president personally involved in attacking the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for receiving foreign money. "It would be better to have a hack consultant like me complain" than having the president do so, he said.

At the White House, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs recast the issue slightly, saying President Obama would continue discussing his concerns about disclosure of the sources of funding for outside advocacy groups.

"There's no reason to back off," he said. "If there are organizations raising tens of millions of dollars who won't tell us who their donors are, my guess is they're not telling us for a reason -- because they have something to hide."
